Hi,

I've looked throught the archives some on this but I wanted to get an idea of how many miles everyone has put on their Getrag trannys to date. I realize that many folks have had multiple Getrags-- just put an entry in for each one -ie vote multiple times. Thanks!!

My brother and I put over 290,000mi on our old 92 getrag. Almost all of those miles are pulling a heavy trailer loaded w/ hay(19000lbs). I think the key is keeping it lubed and not lugging it.

FYI, after it went out we converted it to the NV4500. Well, not more than 10,000mi and we are rebuilding the 4th one. Which means it will be the 5th trans. in the truck in less than 2yrs.

Fitz,

I would bet over 350,000mi. The speedo quit a few years ago. I'll have to look but it says around 296,000.

The thing is I have a one ton flat bed '92 w/ over 500,000mi est. The speedo on it quit on 396,000. My brother now owns it and puts about 25,000 a year on it.

These trucks have pulled 5-6days a week their whole lives and never stranded us once in the 8yrs we've owned them.

To be quite honest I would like to find a 1st gen w/ under 100,000miles in good condition to use instead of my 97. In my opinion, 1st gens are easier/cheaper to work on and have a better pulling susp. and gear train.

Pulled transmission at 125K because throw-out bearing was beginning to chirp. Input shaft nose was worn with a taper of ~0. 120"

It's great to hear about these trucks making it that far, with a hard working life, too. Makes me feel like mine is just getting broken in, at 137,000. :D

Quiting Time?

I just pased the 150K mark. Mine rattles in 5th if I don't keep it filled or overfilled (it leaks). Also the sychro for fourth is tired.

Wow, my truck has only 101,000..... some of the above posts are good to read and I'm hoping I have alot of miles left before needing anything serious done to it.

275,000 miles on original Getrag before rebuild. Rebuild consisted of bearing, synchro and input shaft replacement. Input shaft needed replacing because bearing race surface on small internal shaft bearing had worn considerably. Only one bearing was pitted - all others showed wear consistant with 11 years and this many miles. Gears still showed machining marks on the gear faces. I think the secret is a PAO based synthetic oil, overfill by one quart, change frequently, and do not lug the transmission down.

This truck regularly pulls 10,000 lb trailers and is used for high angle, slow crawling four wheel drive off road work.

Kept properly lubed and not over abused, the Getrag is a good transmission.
