Hi all, I just recently bought my 1st gen and have a couple of questions about everyones oil change intervals. My truck has 238,000 miles on it and I have been using Delo 400 and fleetguard filters for now. I plan to change it to Redline oil in the future. I just put a little over 5,000 miles on the delo and when I changed the oil it came out fairly clear with a black tint. Is that normal for a 12 valve, the oil is always jet black on my 3rd gen. Should I extent my oil change interval? My truck see 300 miles a day/5 days a week and its all highway miles with light loads. Thanks for your help!

Corey

I changed oil and filter , Rotella and fleetguard every five thousand. first motor lasted 257 k just put second one in . broke the crank between number 5 and 6 , 2. 5 thousands clearance on the rest of the crank journals and the cylinders still have cross hatching . go figure.

Your oil description sounds pretty normal for a gen1 12V. The more you turn the power up the faster it gets black.

I generally run 7000 on oil changes.

I have always changed my oil and oil filter every 5000 miles or every 6 months, whichever comes first, however with your 300 per day, 5 days per week, I go to a 6 or 7K intervals. Have your oil analyzed.

When I started oil analysis on my '92 I was changing at 5000 mile intervals. The first report came back that the additive package in the oil was basically that of new oil, and wear metals were extremely low--this led Blackstone to recommend 6500 mile intervals. I tried that and the numbers barely differed, so they recommended I try an 8000 mile interval. However, at this point we were setting out on a long trip from Alaska down to the lower 48 and back. It was almost exactly 10,000 miles on that oil change when we finally pulled back in to the driveway. That afternoon I changed the oil and sent off the sample, and Blackstone told me that the oil was actually still very good and suitable for continued use, however they stopped short of recommending 10,000 mile intervals for me. :D

I do miss my '92.

Thanks for all the replies guys, I guess I'm going to extend my change intervals. I'm thinking maybe 8,000 miles. What about the oil filters? Are they good to last 8,000 miles? Also I may have to use an oil analysis to find out exactly where I need to be.

I never used anything other than Fleetguard filters, first the Microglass ones and then later the better Stratapore ones when I learned that they worked just fine on my '92 even though they were marketed as being for the 24 valve engines at the time. I think the high quality Fleetguard filters have no problems lasting 8000 miles, but if you used a cheapie like a Fram or something similar it wouldn't be good.

I definitely agree with you on doing oil analysis, at least for a few changes just to make sure 8000 mile intervals are okay on your engine.
