How many of you guys carry a spare fuel pump?

Been looking at the new pump Geno's is carrying for $179 or there abouts. After reading the article in TDR Issue 60 on how easy it is to change on the side of the road, I am considering getting one to carry in the tool box.

My '03 only has 37K on it, but 80% of those miles are with a 18K fiver on it's back. Should I be more worried about the mileage or the fact it is 5 years old?

If I buy a replacement pump and put it in the toolbox, how long would it last? Would the seals go bad if I don't install it right away?

Maybe I am just paranoid. I read about somebody who only got 5000 miles on their CP3, then turn around and the next guy has 200K on his. My truck is stock, and will stay that way for a while at least. Even then, any mods will be toward fuel mileage and towing our fiver. My go-fast days are long gone.

Thanks... ... Steve

Steve,

I agree with Forrest... there's nothing wrong with having (and carrying) spare parts!

I carry a large plastic tool box in my truck with most of the spare parts I believe are failure prone (from reading the TDR forum) for my particular model/year of truck. I view it like having insurance... I hope I'll never need to use any of these parts, but if I do, I'll be darn glad to have them. Parts sometimes seem to fail at the most inopportune times when you're travelling in the middle of nowhere, so being prepared helps make a bad situation a little better.

Going from memory, I carry the following:

Rebuilt fuel injection pump

New lift pump

Rebuilt injector

Water pump and gaskets

Serpentine belt

Thermostat and o-ring

Coolant temp sensor

Intake air temp sensor

MAP sensor

Crank angle sensor

Transmission output speed sensor

Accelerator pedal position sensor

Extra relay for power distribution center

Extra fuses

Selection of wire and terminals

U-joint

Oil

Oil filter

Fuel filter

Transmission fluid

Power steering fluid

Coolant

Tools to install any of the above on the side of the road

I may have forgotten an item or two.

As to shelf life, that's not something I would worry about if you keep the parts dry and rust free. I've wrapped most of my spare parts in rust preventive paper and keep them sealed in zip lock bags.

If you someday sell your truck and still have the spare parts, you can always sell them here on the TDR, on eBay, or on Craigslist if the new buyer doesn't want to buy them.

Best regards,

John L.

Wow, what a parts collection. I only carry a fuel filter, course I don't have any of the problematic sensors, pumps, etc. you guys do.

Why not install a FASS and not worry about it and maybe get a few more miles per gallon.

Can't say that I have ever heard anyone report anywhere near "a few" more miles per gallon with a FASS. I have a FASS and it made little to no difference in mileage.

As to the original post, I do keep my stock lift pump packed away in the truck for whatever reason might come up.

I used too when I had a Furd because it was always going out. However with my 95 and present 05, I haven't had that problem, knock on wood. I do carry AAA however.

Wow, what a parts collection.
I just remembered I also carry a spare serpentine belt idle pulley / tensioner... and a Good Sam Club Emergency Road Service membership card!

Hmmmm... is it possible to be too prepared? :)

JLandry... . why not just tow a spare truck behind you? Just kidding. I do believe in being self-sufficient. It has saved me more than once. A lot of the roads we travel have limited cell service, so I can't even count on AAA (yes, I am a member).

As to the FASS, right now we are desperately trying to get some bills paid off (and become more self-sufficient), so until then, if I can get by with a $200 pump, I will have to wait on the $$$ FASS. Heck... I am still have a long list of non-essential guages I want to add at some point in time.

Thanks guys... . keep the ideas coming.

I also carry a spare pump w/washers. Running Holley Blue pump down on the frame rail just in front of the tank with Geno's larger fuel line to the fuel filter. I carry a spare fuel filter too.
