Some of the finer points of the PSD

Hey guys, just curious how many owners around the country pay property tax on their vehicles and how much ?

I live in CT and I just payed $420. in tax to my town of Ansonia on a 96 2500 SLT. It hasn't gone down in about 3 years.

In Utah you have to pay taxes on everything you own, I think if it is up to 2 years old it is $150 and goes down in 2 year increnents at $25 per year, down to $25 minimun. Everything else, ATVs, Trailers, etc. are based on value.

Hey Toolman, the 12 huh... ..... I'm workin this weekend... . but what time at hooters? My truck is a mess ( slowly turning into a work truck ) but I'll see if I can clean it up and make it down there.

$720 BUCKS I don't feel that bad anymore !!!

Nope, no personal property taxes in Texas for an individual - just real estate taxes. No income tax, either. ;) (We won't discuss sales taxes up to 8%, however. )

Well it really depends on 2 factors...

1. Your Mill rate

2. Your book value

If your town is like my town, my mill rate has been going up steadily. (Those darn new schools) It could be that comparing the mill rate to your book value your not seeing the tax reduction. Book is going down but you are getting taxed more. That may be why you are paying about the same.

What is your mill rate by the way... . Mine is 32. 5 :(

In CA it's called the "vehicle licensing fee" - basically a personal property tax. Not to mention sales tax of 7. 5-8. 0% AND income tax... .

Why do you think my truck is registered in WA - no VLF:)

I also live in CT and not only on my truck, but paid just shy of $600 on my Bike the last two years. .

Here in MA they assess the excise tax at 2. 5% of book value. ALTHOUGH, they pull values out of their butts. I had a 84 Merc Grand Marq thaat they assessed at $3500 book value! I just paid $505. 03 on my 2001. I decided to pay it in CASH at Town hall, fifteen minutes before they closed, in new one dollar bills. The lady was laughing her A#@ off until she relized I was serious about that payment method. I grinned for hours after that one:D

How's 843. 75  and No It does not include my 5er, that's another 716. 03 and No that does not include the wife's 560 sel,  Should I go ON?

About paying property tax on your own tools, Yes my tools.

Everyone in VA pays to own a vehicle even if you don't license it. When Uncle Sam moved me to TX the first thing I did was to change residency. Now I am in FL and looked into registering here. No state income tax but the registration was fee was more than I wanted to part with then. Exception was if you could prove you previously had something registered here and then the price break was considerable. I don't recall actual amounts but I am still a TX resident, temporarily displaced.

You guys have to pay a property tax on this stuff? Is that besides the DMV reggie fees and such? In NYC you pay sales tax (8. 25%) when you purchase, and then a kinda reasonable reggie fee every 2 years (trailers and bikes every year) I don't know about property taxes on anything but my house! BTW, if the DMV thinks your purchase price is too low, they go market value and then sock it to ya.

Hey guys, move out to Oregon; My truck costs me $30 for two years, (or did they finally get that raised to $50. for two yeas??)

The '01 29' fiver is the same. Thats total fees and taxes of any sort on the vehicles.

There have been many out of state people registering their vehicles in Oregon to take advantage of these low fees, but Oregon is now cooperating with other states to identify and assist in prosecuting those people----one of whom I leaned recently was one of my sisters who saved several hundred per year by registering her Caddy in Oregon although she lives in Washington. I know it cost her several more hundred when she got caught ,but she doesn't want to talk to me about that because I had warned her a year or so before that she was heading for trouble.

When I lived in Colorado, my Texas tags expired, and I drove around with expired plates for 2 months. It was cheaper to move back to Texas, than pay property taxes on a 2 year old Cherokee in Colorado. I moved back to Texas, and renewed the plates for $65. 00.

God Bless Texas !!!

Actually, if your truck is used in a business or other commercial purpose, property tax is charged on its value. I don't know what it will cost me this year- the rate hasn't been set yet. Every January I have to advise the County Appraisal District of the value of the truck and all other personal property used in my business as of 1 January and they figure the tax due from those values. Also, the maximum sales tax rate in Texas (charged in most places around Houston) is 8. 25%. :(

Bill,

I think the key words in my post were "... for an individual". I understand that businesses in Texas must pay physical property and inventory taxes, etc.

Sorry about the 1/4% error in the sales tax rate - I was just going from memory, and at my age, that's dangerous! :)
