After watching the board for the past several weeks, it seems that most of the problems are on the pickup models with the 350 hp engine. I haven't noticed many cab and chassis trucks with problems, especially emission problems. This is to cab and chassis owners, how many problems, and what kind of problems. The engine and emissions are different from what I've read and I really don't know exactly what the difference is.

I'll start it off with my truck, I've had one problem, and it went away. The truck wouldn't start, no codes, no cel, nothing. Just wouldn't start. Dealer and Star couldn't figure it out, then after about 4 hours it just started and has run perfectly every since. This occurred at 50,400 miles. Anyone else? Anyone had the DPF full or almost full on their overhead? I've never had anything. How about it cab and chassis owner, what problems have you had or is it mostly the pickup models and again, what is the difference other than hp.

C&C dependability

I'm with you EB,seems the pickups are having more problems. I have close to 7500 miles on mine and have had no engine or emission problems. I love the truck. It has been very dependable so far.

I can't say that anymore, my truck went down again today and is still in the shop, the only code it is showing is a transmission code which doesn't make any sense because I don't see what a transmission problem has to do with the engine starting and running and besides, I haven't noticed any problem with the transmission. I tend to agree with BVANR who sent me a pm and reminded me of a post about a truck in Elco, Nv in a shop that had a wide open egr valve. That makes more sense than anything else, especially because I got my truck started today with the 5 key cycle trick he had mentioned in an earlier post.

What post about what 5 key cycle trick???Oo.

A member, BVANR, had a post that the way to reset (close) the egr valve on some of the class 8 trucks was to cycle the key five times, (off and on without going to start) and it would close an egr valve that was stuck open. I tried that this morning and my truck did start, didn't run very well but it did start. Really makes me think the egr valve has something to do with my problem.

I gave credit to the wrong member for the key cycle, it was"Harlan" not "BVANR". BVANR reminded me of a post by Harlan that was talking about a problem similar to mine that happened in Elco, Nv. , that's also when he mentioned the key cycle trick.

As a point of information I called the dealership in Elco, Dale White Motors and talked to Sherman, the asst. service mgn. and he was very helpful and said if my dealer wanted to talk about the problem to give them a call. Seems like it would be a good place to do business from my talk with them.

On another point, it might be that the transmission code I am showing could be the problem. The code shows a dead short in the # 2 switch in the transmission, according to the book there are 4 #2 switches in the transmission, don't know which one it is, and is it a switch or a silinoid. They are going to drop the pan as soon as they get the pan gasket in later this afternoon. I hope it is just a wire, and not the switch, the parts man says they are available "nationwide", but he doesn't know where. Anyone have any ideas about finding something like this?

Back to why I think this could be the problem. When I was farming, in the Case IH tractors, which had Cummins engines, if there was a problem in the transmission, it would kill the engine to prevent further damage to the transmission and/or the engine if transmission were to suddenly lock up. Maybe these new trucks are like that, guess we will find out. In the mean time, I'm still unable to work.

As you can allways find good in bad situations, if its the trany its covered under warranty. Good luck on the repair. EB, do you regret getting the Auto now, if it turns out to be the trany? I remember your posts on the decision to get it wth the auto. The complications of Auto repairs is why I stayed with the manuel trans even with the new Aison 6spd, even with the reputation of that Auto.

No, I'm not sorry about getting the auto. I really don't believe this is my major problem, could be, but I really don't think so. The main reason is I didn't want to get the six speed standard was because of the dual mass flywheel. I've really never had anyone tell me they had good luck with one. I'm sure now that I've said that everyone will tell me that they are great. That is just from the people I personally know. The aisin, as far as I know was not having a problem, it just has set a code. Everything on the transmission was working great as far as I was concerned, the engine was just shutting off. That is why I made the comment about the tractors with the failsafe cutoff if there was a transmission problem. This is a fully electronic transmission, maybe it works that way also, don't know and neither do any of the techs. There was one at a school tues and wed and asked that question, the answer he got was that this was a new engine and transmission and everyone was learning together. Not very confidence inspiring.

I got my truck back this afternoon after 5:00. They replaced a switch in the transmission and did a reflash on it. It had set a hard code p0766, shift solenoid D, performance or stuck off. I never noticed any problem with the shifting on the transmission but they said the computer said to change it so they did. They also did a reflash, don't know which one, it was after 5 and they said to come by next week and take care of the paper work, I'll find out which reflash was done at that time. They did drive it for 45 minutes with the scanner hooked up and said nothing showed. I don't know what they were looking for, but nothing showed.

I drove it around, starting and stopping, shutting the engine off and restarting it for several more hours with no problems. Guess I'll go back to work tomorrow. I did change the fuel filter, you can change it without taking the wheel off. Just take the inter fender out and you can do it over the top of the tire if you aren't to big. I won't do it that way again, think I pulled all the hair out of my chest.

Is it still running like new? Ken Irwin

Not hardly, been in the shop for two weeks, still there. Really not sure exactly what is wrong with it. The new reflash won't clear the cat full service required and check engine light. Service dept really not sure if it needs something else, more reflash or just a new cat/dpf. In the meantime, I sit. Starting to get pretty irritated.

Any updates??

Yes, everything is cleared up. I ended up going to two different dealers, the first one basically didn't find the problem and ended up screwing everything up. They tried to put one of the pickup TSP on my cab and chassis. Needless to say, it wouldn't take. What it did do was wipe out all the memory and get the truck where it wouldn't regen at all. The second dealer ended up having to put the original codes, programs, whatever was in it originally back and then try to find the problem. Turns out the problem was a throttle control valve that was working most of the time but would stick or hang up every now and then, but not enough to set a code. The second dealer couldn't find it either until it completely failed, it wouldn't set a code until it did. Once that happened, it set the code, the valve was replaced and I haven't had any problems since. If anyone has a problem with a truck that either won't start or starts and dies or just dies going down the road, have the dealer or repair service check out the throttle valve or throttle control valve. The failure lamp on the instrument panel is # 20 in my book for the cab and chassis. Might be something else in the pickup book.

To answer your question, my truck is back to normal now, I've put over 1500 miles on it since I got it back last Thursday with no problems.

Congrats EB

Thanks for getting back to us with your experience EB. Now the rest of us have another thing to look out for. Ken Irwin
