I have an 89 Cummins with 660,000 miles on it . I am checking the end play on the crank with the engine pulled and it is around . 090 . I know its time for mains but my questions are has anyone seen a high mileage 5. 9 have to much wear on the crank that a new thrust bearing will not fix? Also is there anyone that can give me the thickness of a new thrust bearing so i can compare to the old one? Lastly is the thrust bearing on both sides of the bearing ? Looking at this one it only on one side. Thanks

Any crank thrust bearing I have seen is one sided. Never saw a Cummins one.

. 090 sounds like a lot but I don't have a spec book.

I looked in my 97 Dodge Service Manual and it has end play on the crankshaft at . 004 min to . 017 max. I don't know if 97's are different from 89's.

It will have a thrust surface on both sides of the journal. I would guess the babbit and the bearing shell and maybe some of the side of the journal are worn away to get . 090" clearance, the front side of the bearing is usually the worn side because of thrust from clutch release on standard transmission trucks. bg

Yeah, its time for bearings. The torsional harmonics get the the thrust bearings after a while and the more towing it does the faster it wears. A manual seems to wear them faster. Thats not bad mileage though, about where Cummins says they should be.
