How much danger towing without gauges ?

which trailer brake controller?

N/W Suburban, Detroit Area Camping?

I have a 2003, HO/6 speed with Jacobs Exhaust brake that will be towing my truck on a 2200 mile round trip to a Rally next month.



The trucks is bone stock . How much danger is there in towing without Boost and EGT gauges. When I went to the rally last year, I had a 98 Ram/V-10. I got on certified scales and my

GCVW was 17,760#. Except for the increase in Ram weight, the load will be the same. My top speed on the Interstates is 60 to 65 with my trailer loaded



When towing, what is the Max EGT before you need to let off ?

What is normal Boost ? Where do you guys towing have the EGT probe Post or Pre Turbo ?

If your truck is stock you should be fine without gauges. They would be nice to have to monitor everything, but they are not necessary as long as you are stock.

I just put the Westach Combo gauge in my stock truck. No way can I exceed 1200 degrees on the egt. The most boost I could muster was 25 psi pulling a heavy fiver. While it is nice to monitor how hard the Cummins is working, you don't really need gauges with a stock set up. Not on the 03 anyway.

IMHO, why not do the gauges? They are cheap insurance and fun to watch. My truck is bone stock and I can do better than 1200 when bringing it up off the bottom after coming around a switchback on Teton Pass or the Beartooth, for example.



The answer is backing off and dropping a gear. But the way the 555 pulls up off the bottom reminds me of the ol' 12v, almost :)

When are you heading out? Are you going to head down 87? Definantely if you get to putting gauges in I would suggest pre-turbo and a sustained max of 1250 dgrees. traveling 60-65 you shouldn't have any problems unless you're climbing a long hill with your foot to the floor to maintain that. Did you get the carry-all all done? How did the first test drive go?

I didn't have gauges on my 01. 5 or my 04. 5, both stock. I pull a 10K 5er, much of it at higher altitude. While I never put all that many miles on either truck, I never had any problems. I do listen to what the engine is telling me and back off the power or down shift when climbing the hills. If BrakeSmart ever comes out with the Boost/EGT module for their brake controller, I may install it. I think that would be a slick solution for a stock causual tow vehicle like mine.

Carryall should be done by this weekend. Heading to the National Power Wagon Rally in Iowa June 2. Wont be coming down the Northway, I take Rt-8 over to Utica then I-90 west. NO big hills between here and Iowa. I will post pictures of the Carryall on the TDR Cummins COnversion forum when its done.

If you needed a pyro in stock configuration Cummins would insist that the guage would be in the truck. You don't need it box stock.
 
Make sure that the clamps on the hoses that route turbocharged air are tight. I developed a leak in mine and was able to exceed 1250 degrees while towing in the Rocky Mts. My gauges quickly detected the problem.
 
If I had of had a transmission gauge and an EGT gauge on my first Ram I would have saved myself a lot of grief before burning up two transmissions. Get the gauges especially if you install an exhaust brake.
