Ram Sales

Titled and Registered my new used 97 Dodge Ram 4x4 CC, Auto, CTD today in California and was a bit shocked at what registration costs. Luckily the previous owner had just registered it in February, but it him $330 because it's a "Commercial" truck.

What are you guys paying for registration?

Here in SW Mo. , I just renewed last month, $76. 50 + $7. 00 agent fee, total $86. 50. This is for a 2 year tag.

That 97 in Maine would cost about $250. 00 to register every year.

My '06 cost me $1100. 00 plus the 5% sales tax the first year, then will decline every year to a low of $400. 00 per year at the 6 year mark.

Most of that cost is for the town, called excise tax. Based on the sticker price of the vehicle, not what you actually paid for it.

You have to have the window sticker in hand to register a new vehicle the first time. Paid $9000. 00 less for the truck then what the sticker showed but still taxed on the full price.

Ridiculous taxes and fees in this state. #@$%!#@$%!

Also have to pay excise tax to register a camper or horse trailer, fifth wheel at a year old cost $450. 00 plus sales tax to get a plate.

I can buy a flatbed, a 53' box trailer, a utility trailer etc. and get a plate for $15. 00. Makes perfect sense, doesn't it????

My new 2009 has a Age based Registration. . here in Utah. .

$150 for the property tax + $81 for the registration fee. So $231 a year and it will go down every year as it is age based, not value based

My 36' Toy hauler just got registered for $161. This is a 2005 model

I have been paying $135/yr since I bought my 2006. That's better than some, but a far cry from the $35/yr for my wife's Nitro...

Here in Kansas, I just got my tags for the 03' 3500, it was $257. 00, that is mostly property tax. It does go down a bit each year as the truck ages. Also when you buy any vehicle that requires registration here in Kansas you pay the sales tax, if you buy it from the dealer, you pay them, if you buy from private party you pay at the courthouse. I think that is highway robbery, everytime the vehicle is sold they collect sales tax again.

Just my rant... .

Boy!. seems like Missouri and Washington is the place to be. . How is the cost on other things? in those states?

$526 here in Ca for my '07 2500. Next year,I'll chuck the commercial plates because my camper never comes off. It'll drop $208(weight fee). Mild climate+entitlement mentality=high taxes. My utilities were only $67. 00 last month so sometimes things even out.

Sorry fior the long reply.

I understand the frustration on paying for your tags on vehicles in some states. But I think we need to look at the big picture and what we all pay for in taxes to live in each state.

In IL I can register my truck for $99 a year B plates for a vehicle weighing under 8,000 lbs. If I had a 1 ton this would be higher such as $185 or higher depending on what I tagged the vehicle weight for.

We need to look at all the taxes we pay for such as sales, motor, income and Property taxes. These are different per state and are included in all of our tax burden.

Note: Tax Freedom Day represents how long Americans must work

this year before they have earned enough money to pay all federal,

state and local taxes for the year. New Tax Freedom Day data is

released every year in April.

Source: Tax Foundation Special Report, No. 165, “America

Celebrates Tax Freedom Day,” which is based on data from the

Bureau of Economic Analysis and includes all federal, state and

local taxes.

Here is the taxes per capita chart.

Of all the Northeast States, New Hampshire is really the only one that has it's act together. No sales tax for most things, cheaper booze (Liquor stores at State Rest Areas too!), better roads, etc.

Maine just can't seem to figure it out. Of course with 50% of the state on some kind of aid, people moving here from other states because our aid programs PAY BETTER THAN THE STATE THEY LEFT, and Maine's anti-business climate it just cripples the working stiffs. We are tired of dragging the whole mess... . :{
