Deciding between two trucks--a heavily modded one ($19k) and a 1996 12v 5pd 4x4 stocker (166kmiles ) for ($8k)

I want about 400rwhp so im gonna need a fuel plate, 4k rpm kit, 4inch pipe, afe intake, 191's, fix kdp, and possibly upgrade turbo to hx40 and ats manifold. What do you guys this that will cost? under 2k if i do the work myself? Also, with upgrades like that, is that realistic power numbers?? I want something for daily driver but has some balls and will still last... Is 166k miles to many miles to start putting mods on?

Also, i plan on putting in a 6spd conversion with sbc clutch later, those run about 3,000 for everything later

thanks

I would take the stocker.

My theory is that the CTD is using about 1/3 of its potential, thats why they last 800,000 miles. The modded one has been tapped, and you don't know how hard it's been run.

The stocker may have been run hard, but at 1/3 of it's potential. 166k? It's almost broke in.

Don't you just love these things

A friend of mine bought a '95 12V stocker farm truck with somewhere around 221,000 on it about 8 months ago put 370 inj HX-40 turbo delivery valves air filter and clutch and is now working on twins. He runs it pretty hard and hasnt had any trouble at all with it. It had a couple of oil leaks and minor stuff like that which he has already fixed but other than that it runs real good. No problems. I think Id go with the stock truck to.

hey..... I have stock injectors, and stock governor springs... I am at 416/898... see my siggy for mods... it is not necessary for 4k GSK's, and 370's. the proof is in my dyno charts.
