well my dad ordered his new truck a 01. 5 auto slt 4x4 but he would take a huge bath on his 98. 5 swb quad cab 4x4 slt. It has 72k on it, a cab high shell, gear venders od, and I just put in 275's a month ago,3. 54 posi and its driftwood in color. How much is it worth really?
He wouldn't tell me what they offered but only said it would be a huge bath(meaning a big loss). I appriciate any input.
Thanks in advance

Adam,
I have found Edmunds gives about the most accurate value for used vehicles. Seems to be more realistic than Kelly Blue Book, at least for vehicle pricing where I live. The Edmunds site is Here

I bet they offered him under $10K.

They tell you the song and dance "we can't sell these trucks for much". But call them looking for a used truck and they say "we can't get enough of them, but we can put your name on a waiting list".

Adam,
Not the same but maybe a valid data point for you. My dad just sold his '96 2500 CC SWB 4wd 360 V8/auto w/60k miles for $19k in Portland, Oregon - local dealers were willing to pay $11-12k.

I would think your dad could do much better for his truck.

Brian

Definitely look at Kelley, Nada and they have all the $$$ values you will need. That is where I went when I got the price figured out for my last CTD, that I sold. Fair for your Dad and whoever buys it. Easier for the purchaser to get a loan if you dont stick it to him, like the dealer tried.

If you can you should always sell your vechicle your self. The dealers will rip you off on the trade in with out a doubt. That is where they make up for the good deal they are giving you on your new truck. When I bought my last truck I had an old beat up pickup. The dealers says. . I will give you $500 for that. I said nope, and sold it for $2000 and a pistol.

adam the dealership buys black book and sells blue book. the thousands in betwwen are many. have your dad sell it outright. plus if its tied to you it should sell fast. the dealerships try to screw you new and used, but good luck.

I would go to www.kelleybluebook.com and they are very accurate. That is where I priced our 95' Ram and we asked a little more than what it said and ended up selling it for more than we ever thought we could get out of it. Don't go to the dealer because they will not come close to giving you what it is actually worth. You will be suprised how much people are willing to pay for a good, dependable truck. Good luck.

Just a few of my obsevations...

If you can trade a vehicle for price=x difference, or sell it yourself and get=y, and purchase the new vehicle for=z, then you pay sales tax on the difference of z-x that you could of save by trading. My dealer will allow me to bring my buyer in and purchase the vehicle from them saving me the difference in taxes.

I trade our farm vehicles and my personal vehicles for no more than $4500/year apples for apples. I could have traded my 98 12v reg cab 4x4 5sd in on my 01 ex cab auto 4x4 for just under $11k last spring, but we opted to keep the 98 and add the 01.

Yep. . . I do the same as Brant. If the dealer wants to make a sell, they'll do it. I have given them $200 in the past just and a "Thank you" kind of thing for doing the paperwork, etc.

OK, here are the numbers from my current "Black Book" (the real book) Avg. 18,400 and cln. 19,650 Plus 2,000 for the CTD. Less 1,250 for miles. These are wholesale numbers. Real $ retail is somewhere in the 20 to21 range. Unless you find someone that knows about the gear vendors, it won,t bring a dime more with it or without it. I have been shopping for a truck for my Dad all this week. It's a pain, and I am in the biz... ... . We totaled his Cheby 2 weeks ago with a 5th wheel behind it. Totaled the whole rig. The insurance co. just paid him $13,405. 16 for a truck I had him in for $9,750. God is good... ... All the time!
