I know my transmission came with Morpar ATF+4 but I do not know how much oil it takes to change it. Have looked on every page of the owners manual and no place does it give the amount of transmission fluid it holds. Same for the real axle, know it uses 70-95 gear oil but no where does it say how much it takes to refill after changing. My truck: 2005, cummins, 3500 dually with 48RE and non-slip rear axle or what ever they call it. Please help me find the quanties I need for doing the service on them both. I plan to use the Mopar transmission fluid but want to switch the rear axle to synthetic (mobil one). Thanks for the help

Transmission depends on if your doing just a trans pan drop and filter replacement... this would take approx. 6-7 quarts depending on how long the truck sits as more fluid will drip out.

Hard to do a complete fluid change out on a 48RE without a flush machine... . my opinion is it not necessary anyhow unless the fluid is burnt.

Loosen differential cover bolts starting at bottom but do not remove them yet. after you get them loosened a few turns pull the bottom out a little to allow fluid to drain. Then you can remove the cover and inspect gears. Gasket is reusable.

The rear axle will take 4 quarts... fill to level stamped on cover or until fluid just runs out the fill hole... . either is acceptable. Use synthetic fluid in the AAM axles which your truck has... . GL-5 rated.

Front axle... if 4X4 will take 3 quarts... fill the same as rear axle... . GL-5 rated.

If 4X4 change the tranfer case fluid also... ATF+4 fluid... loosen hex set screw on the rear back side of case... fill through top hex set screw... Do not remove bolt on bottom. Takes 2 quarts.

do a search on any of the ram websites, most have year specific downloadable service manuals that will have this information and much more about your truck you will need in the future.

Carlson R. Could you give us a little more information on the ram web sites regarding what and where they are listed ? Thanks. HerbN
