transmission capabilities

You didn't indicate how many miles you have on your truck. my stock tran. went 250,000 after a mild power increase, 325,000 with a D T T, which was not a full D T T, and then a complete D T T in June 2004. Now at about 668,000 with a power increase at about 300 hp, same motor, original injectors, trying to make 1,000. 000 before an overhaul or more, who knows. Stormy

There really isn't any way to say for sure. Depends a lot on how well it was built in the first place. I could slip mine when the motor was stock. Was really bad if I got on it, with the BOMBed motor. Can't slip the new transmission. :D

FWIW.

Your current trans is holding way more mods than my stock one did at 100k. My stock trans was good with only a #6 tst plate. After adding 3k gov springs and bumping up the timing, the TC would no longer hold.

I could slip a stock rebuilt transmission with just a stock motor w/ 185k on the clock. I could never slip the Blumenthal and haven't had the DTT in long enough to try and slip it yet.

MAleksandrowicz,

I see that you already make good power. ;)

You must not drive the old girl to hard for it to last this long.

If you plan on that turbo & or downpipe, you will need both the triple disc & V/B in that trans!!! :D

Save for the trans before you have that 350-400 hp truck sitting on the side of the road. :{

Remember that stock trans wasn't made for your upgrades that you have now. Oo.

Best of luck,

Whats a DTT and could i slip a clutch w/ a #10 plate only Haven't yet and its just stock.

41jay,

DTT is a transmission Company out of Canada.

Diesel Transmission Technology.

You could slip anything by giving it enough fuel. Its how you drive that will tell.

You may want to look into South Bend clutch after some improvements.

A #10 is a good plate providing you don't run in the full forward position.

Can you resist doing all this?

Keep those questions coming.

WAYNES WORLD

Not to highjack the thread, but my clutch is holding a 10 plate full forward... is this some sort of impossibility  ?? Maybe the guy before me put a stronger clutch in?? I kinda doubt it though as nothing else was modified. Just food for thought.

Nick2,

Is that your only mod a #10 plate? :p

You are doing ok with that. Great. Its also the driver that dictates how long it will hold up.

I'm thinking 41jay had more mods on his truck. Sorry. :( Didn't mean to cause any concern.

On the lookout for other bombers, a suggestion---

watch the locations of other members to find them closer to you. We have a good number of them in Minn. Oo.

WAYNES WORLD

Waynesworld,

Ive been keeping an eye on the MNTDR postings, but still looking for anyone closer to tinker with. Thanks for the suggestion though. :)

From the looks of things, 41jay and I are about the same as far as mods go. It doesnt look like he has injectors yet. I can assure you I dont baby the truck, but I also dont tow with it... might be what's keeping the clutch alive. Maybe someone else has a stock clutch surviving behind a forward ten plate?

Im just curious

I have an hx40 on the way and set of 370's so Im sure Ill find the clutches limits in short order.

Nick

nick2,

A note of caution---- ;)

Don't slide your plate after installation of the injectors & turbo. :p

Are you doing the install?

Have you done this before?

Both are easy to do. Oo.

If you need assistance---just PM :D

The season is coming for get togethers. They have a dyno event in Franklin

[ milw. ] on the 26th.

Come on over.

my transmission will slip with just a tst #8 plate. just rolled over 270,000 km's. if i tromp her hard empty she shutters going into overdrive, with aload on she shutters a lot more even just rolling on the fuel to increase speed. i will be rebuilding this summer when the ctd funds accounts gets built up.

CMckee,

I see you got your money's worth out of that trans. :p

While you are saving, check into the triple disc converter & V/B additions.

The top manufactures all have good quality products. Just make it plain BEFORE you do it that you tell them where you want to go as far as HP & TQ to best judge your trans rebuild.

I just had my second upgrade because I didn't think I would go to above the 400 hp range. See its good & bad news. :{

Save the extra for some gov & afc springs, 4" exhaust, BHAF, etc :-laf

Givem some soot,

I think this thread really hasn't answered the question. I was wondering the same thing for I am about to pour the cash out for a transmission. With just a torque converter and V/B how much power can it hold. I know alot depends on driving style, miles, etc. but just wondering what all you guys have had experience with. Would like to just build the whole transmission right off, but the bug has bitten hard and I really want to put the fuel to it. Thanks

There are too many variables to give exact #'s on what a stock transmission can hold. Some can hold more than others. Mine was okay w/a #6 TST plate that was rated at 230 hp/ 605 tq. After adding 3k gov springs and advancing the timing the TC started slipping. ndurbin could slip his transmission w/a stock motor. TST web site I believe recommends not pushing a stock 94-95 transmission above the #6 plate. In my case that was accurate but not with ndurbin. Its a gamble, but you won't regret a performance transmission such as DTT after you do it.

I am also in almost the same dilema you guys are in. Except i want to sell my truck and don't really want to put 5g's into the trans to make the next guy happy. I have finally after doing ALOT of checking around came to the conclusion. Do it once and do it right!!! If you like power, you need a full upgraded trans with at least a billet input shaft.

I also wanted to get out as cheap as possible, with just a TC/VB. I came to realize that as soon as the OD bands take a crap on me while i'm out of town i will be SOL!! Myself i don't want to take that chance. I'm doing it once and doing it right!

Good luck with your decision.

In hopes of not starting a trans argument, i won't specify the manufacturer to get my business, unless someone asks.

Curtis

Guys,

The trans will not run that much. I spent around $2,000, for mine. You can see who I went thru. Oo.

The thing you can do is buy what you will need. :p

If you are going to stop at 300-350 or go to the 400-500 range. These are two different things. Just make sure you talk to your trans guy.

Tell who ever you give your hard earned cash to, how much HP & TQ you will shoot for. My problem was I underestimated my final figure. Then I upgraded the TC & VB. My Trans guy gave me credit for the previous work in exchange for the current finished product. THATS A GREAT GUY !! :--)

I6DZL,

You can buy a not so tight TC & a lower pressure VB to get the truck sold!:D

Now, lets go make some soot!!!!!!

waynes world,

thx for the tips, i am pretty happy with the 230/605 that the #8 produces, don't expect to do much more. i will get the heavy duty flex plate from cummins when we rebuild. i have a transmission guy that has done awsome work for me in the past, rebuilt my 90 dakota @120,000km's and it is still runing at 323,000km's and still pulls the truck ahead on a hill at idle.
