Realistically, how much power can be made with the VE pump? Im currently on the lookout for a first-gen truck, and want it as a driver/racer/dyno truck. The power levels Im thinking of are 7-800 at the tires, fuel only but may give it the squeeze occasionally. Is this at all possible with the VE, or would it not even make that much power without nitrous? Im trying to do research on the first gen trucks, but it seems theres not many guys that are making big numbers with them. And what are the big differences between the 1st and 2nd gen 12 valves, other than pumps and injectors? Thanks

KTA has high numbers as far as I know, at around 627 hp. Stomp was at high 500's last I remember. Both have extensive mods to the injection pumps, KTA has a 14 mm injection pump head, custom made.

300's are easy, 400's are doable, getting high 500s and into 600s gets pretty difficult.

The first gen cylinder head is different then the second gens, first gens don't flow as well. I don't know if the cams are the same, but at 800 hp on fuel only, I suspect that will be another aftermarket component anyways.

Good point on the cams Michael, Piers has different grinds for 1st and 2nd gens. Something to do with the way the injection pump times the fuel.

I was aware of the difference between non-intercooled and intercooled heads with regard to the injector hole size, but didn't know of the flow differences between heads. Are the intercooled heads different from the later 12V heads?

Smaller turbos, smaller intercoolers, lower pressure IP, smaller ID high pressure fuel lines too IIRC, lift pump. I am with Michael, at 800 HP that engine isn't going to look much like a 1st gen engine by the time you will be done.

You know, I cannot even imagine three times the power I have now. Just think of how many parts I could break then. :) What a ride it would be.

For your research and questions, try 1stGen.org.

I think 700hp is doable. I remember when Piers thought 300 was far fetched, and would make tons of smoke and heat. Or so a guy told me Piers had said it (ca. 1999). Back in the day, when 185s were cheap, and PODs hadnt caught on as cheap power adders.

The power can be made. As was mentioned in this post 600 is doable. Old Smokey did over 600 too. The trick is to get a set of good flowing injectors (I used DDP #4's in mine and did 334 with only 1 1/2 turn in on the pump) a good fuel pin, a much better turbo, good clean air, and a good flowing exhaust.

One of the things you may hear is the lack of flow in the aftercooler. Well, if you have someone cut off the stock inlet and outlet's and replace then with larger tubing you will see a dramatic increase in flow. The stock ones choke down to 2" and that is bad.

check some of the old threads and you will find a lot of info. Take what you need and make it work.

Have fun

Thanks guys. About 5 minutes after I posted this, I remebered about 1stgen.org and went over there and found some good stuff, so Ive been mingling over there some... most of the bigger forums didnt exactly have what I was looking for, but they seemed to over there... I did notice many of the posters over there are here too. I think Im going to look into the 14cm head for the pump, anybody have info on these? And is there a higher-flow VE pump off another application, say an industrial engine, that would swap over? Im just starting to learn about the VE trucks, so sorry if these have been answered before (Im still searching!!) Thanks again

You can look at my sig to see my last dyno #s. My set-up is close to Daves (HDM48).

Dave good to see you still come over to visit us 1st geners now aqnd then.

Bob

Check my sig. The last numbers are squezzed. Your gonna need a deep wallet and some knowledge. Not to mention head work, cam, turbo(s), a BIG set of edm's, 14mm VE, and a good clutch or auto transmission. And thats just the start of it.

Personally, if your looking for that kind of power buy a second gen 12v. And spend the money on it.

Unless your like me, buy a firstgen fairly cheap, then ppump it when you get bored with the VE.

Only shooting for 700/800 RWHP? You need to think big. At that level it could only serve as a daily driver/go-getter/'round town rig.

:D
