Howdy folks...

I am a long-time browser of this forum and now I finally got my own so I reged:D

DavidTD, if you read this... I am Rick's friend who has been searching for a while... . FOUND ONE!!

My question is this... . the truck already had the mods listed below when I bought it. I want to take the muffler and resonator off, but am afraid of overpowering my stock TC. My performance guy (Jeff from Garmon Diesel) said my current level is near what it will hold. So how much power would I have with just a 3-inch pipe in place of the muffler? Will I still be alright??

Thanks...

Will

How much power???

Removal of the muffler will cool the exhaust somewhat by lessening the backpressure. I am guessing maybe 1-2 more lbs of boost max. It will be louder, which makes some users complain, especially about the "drone". I installed a 3 1/2" NAPA straight through muffler and left my resonator on. Not really louder (except for heavy towing), just a lower/throatier sound. I gained 1 lb of boost.

Will,

First off let me say welcome aboard the TDR ship.

Some will say you will gain nothing from an upgraded exhaust system, except cooling of E. G. T. 's and better spoolup.

There is reputable guy on here that runs a performance shop that has done testing on a 4" exhaust verses a stock exhaust. His claims are approxiamately 30HP gain but if I remember right it was also with a modified air filter.

So takeing the two statements from information gathered on the TDR I would say you will gain some where between 0-30 HP.

I do not know how many HP your setup has (I no very little about 12 valve trucks) so take the statements made along with a grain of salt and figure out if your over your limit.

I know all this sound confuseing or more like no information at all, but, the longer your on the TDR and the more you read the more my statement will make sence. :)

Enjoy your new truck.

You prolly wont get enough HP from a straight pipe to make any difference to your trans unless it already gives you trouble. This is not a major mod on a diesel like it is on a gasser for HP but will help in the ares mentioned above and will get you a little power. I have owned 2 Cummins Dodges with straight pipes and like them fine 98% of the time. If you hate noisy exhaust you wont like it but if you have always liked the sound of a healthy exhaust you will be fine. Kinda listen around when you hear a Dodge coming and you can tell if they are straight piped as they sound more like a semi truck.

I was flipping the channels on the tube today and guess what I tuned into... Some new performance car show... Well, they had a 2nd gen 3500 with a Cummins in it... Might have even been the guys from Shade Tree, I forget... Bombing it with BullyDog goodies... They dynoed with every change they made... A 4" exhaust and free flowing air filter gave them 7 extra ponies to the rear wheels...

When they finished they had dynoed to about 430 HP to the rear wheels... They started with 195 hp at the wheels... They said only 4 k in cost averaged out at $ 17. 00 per horse added...

They even put a propane kit in it ! And two BullyDog comps...

I should have taped the show... It was interesting to say the least...

Congrats Will.

Yes your truck is nice indeed.

Jeff will guide you along if you let him know what you want. Removing the muffler will add the sound you are probably looking for BUT, if you are wanting to add a 4" eventually, I'd either leave it alone until then or go to a muffler shop and get prices for doing so. In some cases, it is better to save the money on the muffler elimination kit and put it towards the 4". I have the Bully Dog system I bought from Jeff and I am real happy with it.

As far as power goes, Jeff has added a little fuel with plate mods, has advanced your timing a bit, and I believe added a spring kit. He has left you on the safe side of the transmission and EQT's.

Get some gauges, and then the transmission mods (valve body/TC) and then go wild. We can dyno you along the way;)
