How much shaft play?

Not like the title may sound at first. hehehe!



Today I was installing an ATS manifold and removed the turbo, when I did I grabbed the turbo shaft in the compressor side and wiggled it around. I can feel what seems to me a bit too much play for real high rpm work.



How much up and down play should it have?

You should have no end play at all. About . 020-. 025" up and down is fine. It should feel tight right after you kill the engine, when there is still oil in it. I was worried about the same thing. I even pulled the housings to make sure nothing hit. Craig
 
I had the same question on my 1st truck and was told as long as there is no end play and it doesnt rub its ok. Did you find your problem yet?

no I have not even started it up today. I did manage to just finish up the installation of an ATS manifold though. I wanted to install the 4000 kit, but Piers says it looks like I got the 4000 kit in already. Actually I dont remember if I installed three new springs or just two new springs. When I opened the box up Friday from Piers it had what looked like the same kit I installled a few weeks back.

Man, I guess Im gonna get the thing apart in the next few days and see what the heck I did install.

The governor spring kit came from MArk at TST and IM not remembering what the kit was now. I thought it said 3400 rpm kit.

After talking to Piers there is really no such thing as a 3400 rpm kit. Maybe Mark packages up the 4000 rpm kit and tells everyone its for 3400 rpm.

After the install the truck would rap past 3400 with ease. I actually got it past 3800 on accident.



You might be getting a 4000 rpm kit instead John.

I will know more in the next few days.



I need someone with a timing kit in the Dallas area.

If not Diesel Injection Service just opened a shop in Dallas, I will go to them Monday morn.
