Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) How much to fill NV4500?

I drained the oil out of my transmission last night (took both pto covers off) and when I went to refill it it only took 3 5/8 quarts to fill it back up. My owners manual says it takes 4 quarts and everything I've read on here also says 4 quarts. What did I do wrong?

That's right, It uses about 3. 7 quarts.

I just put in a fresh NV 4500 in my 1 ton. I put in 4 quarts of amsoil 75-90 through the shifter hole and called it done... .
