Question for those who used a 3rd gen engine in a repower project...

I called a local salvage yard to get some ballpark prices for donor parts (years 2003 to 2005) and he said ballpark I should expect to give around $7500 for an engine, auto transmission, and transfer case and other misc. items that I required. The price he gave me was based on an 04 model with 14,000 miles that he had. Does this seem about normal?

If the parts are guaranteed to be in working order and free of cracks from impact, the price is about right.

I'd make sure you get in writing from the salvage yard that you'll want the warranty to be extended to allow you time to install it and get it going again. Some only give you a 30 day time period to return or exchange it, which ends up being never enough time to get a repower done and get some miles on it.

I guess I'm just stuck on the 12 valves, I've found they're still readily available in good condition, no to mention sound like they actually are a diesel. ;)

If you know someone who has access to insurance salvage auctions you can save yourself money and time by purchasing a complete parts truck (rollover, wreck, etc. ). That way you can get all the small nuts and bolts you will invariably need and can sell off what you dont to recoup some of your investment.

After I sold off what I did not need off my parts truck ('92 W250 with 44k original miles) for my Crew conversion, I ended up only having $1550 into the complete motor, trans, transfer case, Dana 70 rear, dash/wiring, core support and grill, etc. - everything I used for the conversion, and then some.

As it turned out, the engine I got a quote on had a portion of the block that had cracked and been welded  They wanted $4800 for the motor alone.

After some more shopping, I ended up with a brand new engine (305/555), transmission(48RE), and transfer case(NV273) (0 miles on everything) for $6740 :D

I'm hoping to go pick it all up this weekend.

Let the fun begin Oo. Oo. Oo.
