I just check them for leaks from the bottom weep hole, bearings getting rough, or the pulley getting groved from wear and making belt noise.

I replaced mine last Oct. The pulley was getting a deep grove in it from belt wear. It didn't stop my belt noise. But I was doing a drain and flush on it and the KDP. So I did it while I had the system open anyway.

I replace the fleet's water pumps when they begin to seep (weep) coolant. I also keep an eye skinned for bearing wear while the belt is off for other service repairs.

I'll replace my own on the Ram when I do the dowel pin 'cause I have no idea how long it's been on there and it's cheep to do it in the shop as opposed to Interstate Rt 77 ;)

I have all sorts of prices;

cummins new-$160

cummins reman-$119

NAPA new-$65

NAPA rebuilt-$48

The last pump I got from NAPA wasn't machined properly and did not fit.

Hope this helps

Bought mine from local cummins dealer, price was reasonable. Don't recommend the dealer. PDR had a pretty good price also, if I recall correctly.

100K for a water pump? Never heard that one before, but then I tend to stay away from engines that need a spark to ignite the fuel.

Mine has 285K; Mom's 250K; and I know a guy who has 600+ on his. Keep the coolant changed regularly (every 2 years or 30K), and that should help the longevity of it. Maintenance is more than just oil and ATF changes.

PS- I got a new one from O'Reileys two years ago for <$50. Turned out I didnt need it, but was too late to return it by the time I get back here. CB Parker put it in his old pickup.

Heheh... I remember when the water pump died in my '92:

$310 for tow into Las Vegas (80 miles)

$365 for water pump at dealer

$300 for dealer labor

By the time I got the truck back I was out well over a thousand dollars including other stuff (a tire was beginning to separate, other unrelated misc. things).

Not fun.

WOW

I just did my Dad's truck. He will be pulling his boat out of state and wanted the security of a new pump and belt. Has 124K on his original pump.

Lol, yeah, I replaced mine at 215k... it was so bad that it started squeeling, and wouldn't pump water until 1500rpm.

Watch the "O'Reiley's" unit, the one DP sold me... I had to machine it down to it would fit. The casting was sloppy around the edges...

Kind like Daniel! :D

I'm glad the weenie has a new home... it's going to be hauling heavy equipment and christmas trees for a living (guy runs a christmas tree place). The weenie LOVES doing that kind of stuff!

Plus the guy has a lot more money than me, and he's already getting stuff fixed up good and nice.

Boy, this 02 sure is treating me nice! :D  :p ;)

WHO'S treatin ya good?

the 02, or the financier for the newer truck? She like the bigger rear seat? :-laf :D

Sloppy around the edges... ... We'll see... ... ;)

Water Pump Replacement

Did my water pump at 125K, it was original, replaced it with a Cummins remanufactured. I also replaced the bolts just to be sure. The belt only had about 65K on it (goodyear gaterback) but replaced it, will make a good spare, no cracks.

Also replaced the belt tensioner and bolt, thermostat and coolant. Radiator is 2 years old and clean but I replaced the upper and lower hoses.

I'm off on a long vacation Sat morn that will take me through some very hot areas, Phoenix to Las Vegas and then up to Reno then on up to Oregon so keeping the old motor cool is important, repair shops are few and far between.

See ya in a month or so.

water pump

As with the post from Midnite, do it before you die on the road. That cost like heck. However the folks in Alabama weren't near that hard on me. If you are going for long life, don't push it past 300k even if your driving is always near home. They will simply wear out around that time. Long periods of sitting unused will do more damage than lots of driving.

Breakdowns on the road will make you more attentive to pretrip checkups.

My replacement is a NAPA.
