I have a 2 wheel drive Dodge Diesel 3/4 ton with a Automatic transmission and I pull a car trailer with a car in the trailer. How well do they hole up. I have heard they are stronger then the older automatic transmission 95.

I think the BIGGEST problems with the automatics, is when people add more power by installing "chips". From what I have heard from some pretty reliable sources, if stock power is left as is, the trannys work pretty well.

I have no intentions installing a chip. Now on my 95 Dodge one ton Motor Home I had Dave in Iowa rebuild the transmission and install a 3 stage torque converter. What a difference that made. My 2006 does have a Jake Brake. I baby my trucks.

The '06 48RE is actually pretty strong and was the first that could be ordered with a factory Jacobs Exhaust Brake.

It was ironic that after all those years of putting the loose, slipping old 47REs behind the best diesel engine in the industry, Dodge finally got it right with the 2006 and 2007 models just in time to dump the transmission in favor of the new six speed automatics.

The down fall of the 48RE is the torque converter . A new torque converter and a valve body would be the hot setup. The same 48RE is in the 04. 5 and 05's they just didn't have enough ram in the computer for the software needed to make the jake brake operate. I run a Smarty and haven't had any problems 93k as we speak. Watch the reverse that's where your temps go out of site.

p-bar Are the 03 HO's with the 48RE's the same transmission? If I could only afford one unit at this time should it be the VB or the T/c??

Thanks dave

I think it would be best to do both at the same time. I am in the same predicament too. Yes all the 48RE's are the same here are the changes from the 47RE. There are quite a few tweaks to the 48RE. Steel rear planet vs aluminum in the 47, six gear planets vs five in the 47, rear clutch plates have more splines, forward band strut is slightly thicker, forward band uses different apply lever, single sided clutch plates on OD direct, more clutch plates, heavier sun shell, stator shaft has graphite seal vs no seal on the 47.
