I recently installed XRF upper & lower ball joints. Before pressing them into my control arms, I could not move either with just my bare hands.
After installation, the lower ball joint feels firm and smooth. The LBJ takes a steady force to move it around. I have confidence in it. I added a bit of grease to it after testing it's movement. They are shipped with grease in them, FYI.
After installation, the upper ball joint would not move by hand. A smack with a rubber mallet in a couple of directions, and I could move it by hand. It takes significantly more force and is comparatively noisy. 8 shots of grease later, it feels somewhat better. It doesn't move as smoothly as the LBJ, though. Its performance concerns me, hence this post.

For those experienced with ball joints, what is a new one supposed to feel like?

give is some miles, to see if it loosens up, you should be able to take steering off and swing the knuckle around with ease.

I agree - it is normal that some ball joints out of the box cannot be moved by hand. I always like to re-inspect my work after doing critical repairs at least a couple of times soon after the components are installed.

After a few miles upon inspection I think you will find the ball joints are working properly.
