I had a not too fun experience the other day, of course it was in a construction zone with no room to pull over. The gas pedal went to the floor at 65mph. Thank God for the Cummins that will pull 3rd gear at an idle and I was able to pull to the next off ramp. The threaded rod that runs from somewhere near under the fuel filter forward came undone. I guess the locknut was not tightened from the last Bozo that worked on it. I screwed it back together and made it home OK and it seems ok but is there a critical adjustment that needs done on this linkage? TIA

John, you need to remove the throttle cable from the lever ball (snaps out) then pull the rubber grommet out of it's bracket. The measurement from the backside of the bracket(towards cab) to the center of the ball at idle should be 5. 0 inches. Grip the center of the linkage with vicegrips while tightening the locknuts.

Deezel,

Like illflem said 5" is about where you want to be.

Adjust the length so that when a helper, or a rock has the accellerator pedal to the floor, the lingage fully reaches the high rpm stop stud,(use you hand to make sure its up against the high rpm stop) then release and make sure the linkage comes back and stops on the idle stud.

My first try I had full travel to the high RPM stop, but would not quite contact the idle stop when released.

If you are having trouble getting the linkage to those travel specs, your throttle cable may be a little too long or streched. I had this trouble with a NEW throttle cable.

Since you have a 5 speed truck, adjustment does not need to be super critical.

It's a very easy adjustment.

Here are some pictures of the throttle rod & ball ends from Fritz's web page: http://dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/troubleshooting/t-rod.htm
