Yeah, issue 50. That'll get you the alternator-driven tach. Your friend could also do a vibration damper-driven tach on his 91, right?

The damper driven is what got the discussion going. . We have an IC model 5. 9 on a stand at school and we discussed taking the pickup off of that engine and installing on the truck. We would need to know what wire performed what function on the sensor and so forth. I told him I remembered reading about the altenator pickup modification.

I found issue 50 and read the article. Any Idea what tach is usually used?

I used an Autometer Industrial, alot of the other guys who did this method did also. I'm not sure what others will work. A gasser tach won't, different signal.

Write to JLEONARD. He has one wired in. I do not know what model tach it is.

Thanks P for the article. I'll install one some day in my classic Non IC rig.

Couple options I know of. One is you get the tach and $ensor kit from Isspro. The sensor kit has a magnet you glue on the vibration damper or timing cover bolt. It will pick up a signal. This would be the most accurate, probly wouldn't have to calibrate it like you do with a alternator tach.

The other option is a Isspro and or Autometer alternator tach. Simple to install. You hardwire it yourself. With the alternator either on or off the truck, remove the rear metal or plastic cover of the alt. Take your wire that you've hardwired with eyelet on the end. Touch it to one of the rectifiers on the back of the alt, until you get a signal on the tach. If by yourself, face the tach towards the hood so you can view it and watch for the needle to jump when you feel around/touch on the rectifiers on the back of the alt. Some will give no signal, wrong signal and correct signal. Once you get that figured out, on the back of the tach is a calibration screw. If no phototach available, you gotta adjust it to 'about right'.

Edit: here is my Isspro alt tach in my gallery. Also I don't care for the 9 votes I've received for a rating of 2 !!!!:mad:https://www.turbodieselregister.com/user_gallery/displayimage.php?&photoid=16830&width=0
