Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) How to build a HOBBY pulling truck???

I am thinking about getting into a 00'-02' 3500 4wd for a work truck. I would also like to be able to build a "pulling" truck, and have NO CLUE what that entails. I don't want an 800hp monster, just a fun truck that is still reliable enough for a daily driver. Where do you start with one of these? I do plan on getting at least a 5spd, prefer 6spd, and 3. 55 gears
