Fuel filter change!!!

If anyone has a step by step on how to change a fuel filter yourself on this truck it would be most appreciated! Yes I tried the search function and all I got back was a bunch of useless crap and no information.

I understand the 2010s are different than the earlier trucks--so please don't tell me how to do it on an older 6. 7, because I know it's different.

First drain some of the fuel out through drain then I believe it's a 1 1/8 socket loosen the top and then spin it off then take old filter out put need seal around top thread's drop new filter in tighten top down and then cycle key a couple time ti refill cartridge start truck and go .

When you install the new seal, be sure and coat it with some clean oil.

I believe the torque on the cap is 18 ft/lbs. It is plastic so if you don't have a torque wrench, don't over do it.

Make sure you dry off around the filter cap really good and check for leaks after you start it.

I've been using a light coating of Vaseline on the rubber seals in lieu of oil. Is there any problem doing that? I feel that since Vaseline is a petroleum product it shouldn't matter. So far there's been no problems.

Found good reference in the good old owners manual... has a step by step procedure starting on about page 85 of the Cummins Diesel Supplement.

Should be no problem on the ring.

The manual for my 09 says to bump the starter to run the pump. I can hear the pump run for a little bit after I bump it, longer than when I just cycle the key. I usually do that one time and the filter is full.

PFranzes,

The 2010 and newer trucks have a key bump to start. You no longer have to hold the key to crank the engine over. Now you turn the key to accessory on and that starts the pump to fill the filter. Atleast on the ST.

Fuel filter that hasn't been relocated? Early ISB6. 7 engines used a cannister with filter insert. Later models like 2010 use a one piece. I don't know anything about a relocated filter.

Have a fuel filter that hasn't been relocated yet that needs to be changed. What is the strategy to get at it? Is there any better access from under the car or through the fenderwell? Any tricks to help?

In your signature you do not state what year truck that you have. This will help us answer your questions better.

I believe all of the 2010 MY trucks and on have had the top mounted fuel filters. These were redesigned from the earlier MY 207. 5 to 2009 trucks with the 6. 7L engines. These fuel filters were accessed from underneath the vehicle.

If you are asking if there is a retrofit or kit for these vehicles to provide a top mounted fuel filter than the answer is no.

Sorry.

I would do a fuel filter search in the 3RD Gen 6. 7L forums for how to service the fuel filter, several of us have posted information on this subject already.

Word to the wise--this isn't a difficult process if you have the right tools. The directions in the owners supplement are easy to follow. Do it from the top, but MAKE SURE you have a 1 1/8" socket and a very long extension (18"). A strap wrench won't get the stubborn top of that plastic canister off. There is not enough room down there to get good leverage on a socket wrench without the extension.
