Does anyone know what is the best way to change the new universal joints? The ones that have what looks like a plastic rod inserted?

I don't understand from looking how it holds the caps in place? Can the joint be pressed out just like we see it? Or does it have to be heated to melt the plastic? How far does the plastic go in and how does it hold the cap in place? Mine are not bad yet but as soon as one goes bad I will change all 3 with grease serts in stalled from nappa. The good news is that there are grooves for snap rings and that's what nappa shows to go in. In the pic you can see the groove. But these factory caps seem to come past the groove a bit.

Today I made a portable press so I think I am ready when the 1st one goes bad. I have changed about 6 on my previous 03 trucks and using a sledge hammer is not the best way to go. I'm at 61,000 now.

To start with take a cutting tourch and cut the center out. Then put the yoke in the press and put some pressure on the cap and apply some heat. They will probable pop when they start moving.

cutting the center out sounds good. I hadn't thought of that. Thx. and then like you say some heat and preasure should work I think.
