how to check codes?

Is there anyway to check the codes of a 2003 Duramax Like the way we can with our Cummings? My brother is having problems, surging, it feels like it's defueling between 2500-3000 rpm when you accelerate heavy, at the same time it will down shift but when it reaches 2500-3000 (as above) it will not up shift... My first thought was maybe the fuel filter is dirty, we will change that first. Can anyone recommend a site for him to join for Duramax?

Need opinion or fact relating to better Diesel engined 10 KW stand by Electric generator, the choice is 3cyl Isuzu or 4cyl Kubota both 1800 rpm, seller favors Isuzu going by experience, although Kubota is $700 higher. What made me favour the Cummins over a V8 Diesel was the 47 less parts ( more thingees to replace, plus wear) Naturally fuel consumed equal for power output, so no choice there. Often user's experience is very useful. Scrum Down
