how to check for codes?

Hi, going to look at a 3rd gen, I dont have a scanner for them yet. I printed off the code list, how do I do the key trick to show codes in the gauge cluster? I did a search and couldnt find anything, remember someone saying that you could turn the key 3 times or something?

Turn on and off 3 times without starting, on the 3rd time leave in the on position, codes if any will show in the odo window.

Do you have a Droid/iPhone? If yes, purchase a relative inexpensive Kiwi and app that supports it. and you can use it on any OBDII
