Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) How to check for cods

I always read here how people are checking for cods on there truck, I don't think everybody here has these hand held computers do they. Then Some where here I read that you had to do something to the truck when you start it. Any help is appreciated thanks.

To check for codes, cycle the key..... on... off... . on... off... . on(and leave on), then read the codes in the odometer window.
