I think I have some bad tie rod ends. If I have my wife turn the wheel while I am underneath I can see the joints move (between the ball and socket, at least that what I will call them). Also if I put a pump pliers the joints there is quite a bit of play evident when I squeeze the pliers. Two of the four joints are like this the others are tight. I think this is causing a slight clunking, that feels similar to a bad trackbar, when coming back to center after making a turn.

Is this a good way to check them? Anyone with any advice before I arange a replacement? How about a good source?

Also, how do you diagnose ball joints on the 4x4 dana 60 axle?

Thanks in advance...

Your system was a good way to check them, they sound worn out. I usually jack the front and try to turn the wheel by hand, motor off steering unlocked. If you feel slop when turning one wheel before the other turns the joints are usually shot.

If you see side to side movement in the tie rod ends they are worn out. The trick with the water pump pliers is an inaccurate way to check for play. All you are doing is loading and unloading the spring that is designed to hold the ball end into the cup.

Same with your ball joints. You did not mention whether you have a 2wd or a 4wd. 4wd... Jack the front axle off the ground so the tire is suspended, With one hand on the top of the wheel and the other hand on the bottom of the wheel... rock the tire back and forth, see if there is any side to side play in the ball joints. It is best to have another person to help.
2wd... . Jack the front end off the ground under the lower A arm. Do not hang the suspension. Then check for play using the same method.
