OK, I'll try to describe this problem as clearly as possible.

We have a '98 3500 with 160k.

A problem has developed over the past four months that I've not been able to correct. The problem started when we had the left rear seal replaced.

The problem: If you remove the left rear inner center hub cap you will see eight bolts. THESE ARE NOT THE LUG BOLTS. These bolts secure a plate that keeps the rear fluid in. These bolts continue to come loose. Not just one or two bolts, but all of the bolts.

We have torqued the heck out of the bolts while using loctite and lock washers. All is well for a short time. Then I'll notice gear oil on the left rear tire. I'll remove the center hub cap and sure as shootin', the bolts will be partially backed out.

Any ideas about how to fix this problem?

Thanks,

Bill Cook

It sounds like.....

Your wheel bearings are loose.

The end of the axle looks like ... ..... "a plate that keeps the rear fluid in", but is only the means to get the power from the carrier to the tires.

Take that "plate/axle" out and you will be able to grab the top and bottom of the tire and wiggle it. If so the bearings are loose. I would get 2 new seals, as you will probably want to adjust the other side as well. It takes a 2 9/16ths" socket to take the nut off. There is a little long "U" shaped clip that bites into the nylon of the nyloc nut. This has to be removed before you can turn the nut out. Different opinions about how to tighten the whole assembly back up. I usually tighten down the nut enough to take all of the play out of the bearings and spin the wheel, back the nut off until I just get "some" play and then tighten until the play is just barely gone. Do not forget to reinstall the locking clip.

A little bit (as in very small amount) of silicone will keep the axle from leaking, but only if the bearings are tight and not allowing the tires to work against the bolts that hold the end of the axle.

Hope that helps.
