HY35 Turbo limitations??

Well, my P7100 pump was "tweaked" a little this past weekend. We slid everything forward, and adjusted the governor. I now hit 3200 RPM before the governor kicks in. But, I'm still only getting 20 psi of boost, so I'm guessing that the wastegate is limiting my boost. Somebody mentioned a boost elbow doohickey, so where do I get one?

Now that I have a taste of a little more power, I NEED MORE! MORE POWER! GIVE IT TO ME! Oh, sorry, got carried away for a second. I think I'll go straight to a #6 plate. Then, I can sell the wife on upgrading the transmission... . "But honey, it needs to be serviced with top quality parts! Sheesh, it has 104,000 miles on it, what did you expect, it would last forever?" Hehehehehehe #ad

You can adjust the wastegate linkage yourself for free. I adjusted both of our trucks to 29psi.
BTW how did you get 3200 rpm? Did you adjust the flyweight spring preload?

I'll try adjusting the linkage, and see what happens. As for the governor, I personally didn't change the setting, a neighbor from north of the border did. #ad
Whatever was changed, it was done inside the pump, and we had the rotate the engine to accomplish the task. Other than that, I have no idea how it was accomplished... ... sorry.

Scollins, I think a lot of us are going to be in trouble if our wives start reading our posts.

Scollins,

Before adjusting the linkage, disconnect the vacuum line from the AFC housing to the wastegate & take her for a spin. Let us know what you see. #ad
Takes all of 30 seconds & a screwdriver.

Scott just pinch the wastegate line off & go for a spin. As long as you're not developing more the 32-34lbs of boost leave it like that. If you are going over that boost level you need to unpinch your wastegate line & install a bleed orfice. BD & TST sells em, 35 bucks & easy to install. Did your wife like the way it pulls now with your new muffler installed #ad

Ooooo, I'll try that trick first! My wife hasn't had a chance to go for a ride yet, but she has heard the new sound. She likes it. "Finally, now you won't be drawing all that attention when you drive around!"

After the pump tweaking, the engine is a little more grumpy when cold. At start up, it will barely idle at 500 rpm, and die pretty easily. But, after it warms up for a minute or so, the idle rpm's come up and she runs like champ. I can now hit 1200 degrees on the EGT, where previously I was maxing out at 1000 degrees. But, I think a 250 hp plate is in my very near future! #ad

MORE POWER!

I haven't tested the fuel pump pressure, how do I do that?

When I fired up tonight at work (ambient Temp 51 degrees) the engine cranked for a few seconds (expected) then fired up and idled at 550 rpm for about 25 seconds. Then, the rpms slowly climb to "warm" idle of 750 rpm. I got no smoke when it fired up, but I could get a whitish plume of smoke when I blipped the throttle. After running for awhile, I could get a blackish gray cloud of smoke by blipping the throttle. When it was fully warmed up, I could get a small plume of black smoke when I romped on the throttle (as expected. )

I tried clamping off the wastegate line, but the boost never went above 20 psi. I think the clamp I used (one of those office binder clips) didn't have enough clamping force to stop the flow. I'll try a more serious clamp next.

Thanks for the tips Piers!

I used viseGrips to clamp mine off, boost went from 16 to 21. I have a 24v but I would think it could work for a 12v also. I will use a more permanent way of clamping off the boost later.

You can also remove the hose from the wastegate and kink it,hold it with tie wire or a twist tie.
I've also heard of people just sticking a golf tee in the hose.

If you have Checker Auto parts there get a line clamp or tubing clamp. (Not sure just what it is called) It is a little bracket with an L shaped rod with a wingnut on the end. It comes two clamps in a package for about $7 or $8. You just slip it over the hose and twist the wingnut tight and presto more boost.

More power? Scott you should take my truck for a spin! Hehe!
I will be going into work tonight(thursday nite) at 6:30pm. If you haven't figured something for your wastegate by then, come by and see me. I've got something you could try.

Ok, finally figured out a way to clamp off the wastegate line. I was out of town (in Portland) on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday last week, so I didn't have time to mess with it until now.

Here are the results: I now max out at 32 psi of boost! Problem now is, I'm used to the small increase in power from the pump "tweaking. " I've got to have more! I think I'll order a 250 hp plate in the next few weeks. I hope to have the plate installed by the next BD dyno days. Of course, I could wait until then and buy one from BD. Probably take less than 20 minutes to install the thing in a parking lot... ... . Just have to get some of that "funny money" the use up there! #ad

I think I'll be shopping for a 230/605 plate while I'm there.

We've got lots of plates in stock & they'll be on sale at Dyno Day. Scott I'll check your fuel pressure for you then too.

I did this on... hrm... Friday. Anyway, makes quite a difference. #ad
I need to get boost and EGT gauges in soon I can tell. Before there would always be the subtle whine, even at max boost, but with the line pinched, max boost sounds more like a WHOOSH and less of a whine. Hmmm, afterburner. #ad
Generally speaking, with my stock Cummins (stock plate slid forward, AFC wheel turned a little) should I be concerned with overboost like this? I still have the stock exhaust & cat. I just don't want to end up having to buy a new turbo. With some luck I'll be able to get boost and EGT gauges in in a week or two, the most I'm going to be towing anytime soon is a 2000lb Jeep on a 1200lb trailer.

Can't complain, all these free power mods are just so cool. #ad

Piers, YOU DA MAN! #ad
You guys take plastic up there (credit cards) or should I get some "funny money" at the bank first?

I think I'm on the slippery downward slope to being a complete, total BOMBaholic! I just hope my pocket book (and auto transmission!) can handle this new found obsession... ... .

Scott don't know about you, but I get at least five "you have been preapproved"letters a week. Sign up for all of them, that's what I did,now have 17 credit cards. Use one to pay the other and keep signing up for more and you can bomb till you die of old age. I'm saving my GM card for the last one,it comes with the insurance that will pay the bill when you die. #ad
