Being Ignored

I've been getting a lot of email lately from credit card and loan companies that's starting to PO me. It's the same companies every day. If I go the link to unsubscribe all I get is
The page cannot be displayed
screen. If I email them it comes back saying their email box is full. What do I do about these jerks?

Bill,

I've tried to filter them out but that's not working too well. Gets a few, but I think they vary their e-mail addresses to get around filters. I just grit my teeth and delete. You can try setting up a filter to delete them and see if it cuts down on the clutter.

I think hitting the "Do not send anymore" tag just lets the sender know that they got a live on the other end. And you get even more spam.

My wife started doing some stuff (selling and buying) on ebay about 2 months ago. That was like opening the flood gates for the junk email. Everyday there are many!
About two weeks ago, we got a mesage from an outfit that said if you sign up with them, they can stop the unwanted emails.
Like a fool, I signed up (no charge), it didnot INCREASE the unwanted emails anymore than 50%!!!!!!!!
I am ready to . 45 the computer.

I used to contact them to not send anymore. Did'nt work. I have now found out if I just delete they don't bother me nearly as much. I Like the ones wanting me to buy or invest. I sent one a mil that said I may act crazy but I ain't. How do you want me to invest with you when you can't read, I told you not to send anymore messages, Just page me. They quit e-mailin me after that.

Whatever you do, don't ever reply to their remove link or hit reply. All that does is confirm an active email address which they then add to all their clients' lists, then sell them to every other direct mail company out there.

If you have hotmail, the "Inbox Protector" works pretty good. It seems to allow 3 or 4 per day through, but shunts the other dozen or so into the $hitcan. If you use Outlook or some other such program, you can block the sender via a rule, but they change their addresses every time - ahh, the joy of scripts. You can also block a whole domain by setting a rule with [soandso] in the sender's address. Otherwise, you're SOL. You might try complaining to your ISP to see if their mail server can block out some of the stuff, too.

I had the same problem, in frustration I decided not have my email address visible on the TDR and it made a big difference, I don't get near as many now. Have you heard off the SPAMBOTS? They cruise boards such as the TDR looking for email address and take them back to their masters.

I've given this a bit of thought (I know that's dangerous so restrain yourselves) and have decided not to hide my e-mail address for any of the on-line things I'm doing. I would rather put up with the junk than miss out on something I want. My other on-line thing is genealogy so I don't want to miss a cousin or research clue because my e-mail address is not available. I've also received a lot of e-mails from brother truckers I would have missed otherwise. Just delete the aggravating junk mail.

O. K. Bill, I won't send you any more of those stupid jokes!

Seriously do you have a "block sender" feature on you e-mail. I gave my e-mail address to a co-worker, dumb move, that sucker FLOODED my e-mail with the most useless crap I have ever seen... . blocked sender, all is well. I do not know if the sender knows he is blocked, but then WHO CARES!

Bill,

If you use Outlook Express the "block" or filter is on the tools menu under "message rules". If you use Netscape it is on the Edit Menu under "Message Filters". The problem with useing these for junk mail is that the senders keep changing their e-mail sent by addresses so these things don't work. They work very well to shut off some jerk. I use Netscape because it's not the virus magnet that IE and OE are. Setting up a filter to remove messages by subject line can be kind of tricky to eliminate junk and still let stuff you want thru. Probably not worth the trouble.

I'm sure if other e-mail companies have this but or if it can be used for unwanted mail.
AOL has a e-mail address for inapproptiate mail you do not want sent.
I think you can turn of your cookies so when your surfing the internet the web sites can not trace you.

I use yahoo as my address when ever I sign up for something, purchase or subscribe. It has a block address button on the mail page and I don't ever hear from them again (until they change their email address). I use my ISP email for home use.

The link above has some interesting information in RE: "SPAM" unwanted e Mail.

The part about emailing the abuse address is helpful.

Also, I use EUDORA as an eMail clinet. It allows me to create filters which examine all of my incoming eMail. It can neatly separate email from everyone into separate folders. If you can inentify anything consistent about the imcoming spam, it can go straight to the trash.

You can get EUDORA at www.eudora.com It's free.

I've been pretty unsuccessful and I'm really annoyed.
I get diploma offers, money at home, re-finance offers, viagra ads, herbal wonders, business opportunities, internet spying information, and more - at least ten every day.
Help... ... ... ... ... . Joe

I use hotmail for it's filtering, also to fill out forms when I need to on websites.

I use my TDR posted address for most email and put up with the extra garbage so that I can hear from you all. Unfortunalty I often miss messages that are hidden in the sea of B. S.

If you have a website, try stealth your email address (if posted). Examples would be to pre-pend a message to the email address. The downfall here is that some folks do not understand what to do with that pre-pend and end up trying to email with it.

Example: NOSPAMDELETETHIS2MAILjdoe@jdoe. moc
The real email would be jdoe@jdoe. moc but the automated 'bots would see the entire thing as an address and use it rather than your real address.

There is an organization 'ORBS' that is working hard to help this mess. Many places will not accept incoming email if the origin is not clear.

If you get too crazy on the filters you may miss emails from people you would like to hear from.

Get a good filtering software package and don't feel bad to tell friends that you DO NOT WANT every chunk of email humor they see.

There are several sites that allow you to surf the internet in an anonymous fashion. Find and use them, that works well!

I suggested in the past that this forum use a graphic for the member's e-mail instead of text. Check the poster e-mail addresses on the genealogy forum at http://genforum. genealogy.com/ A spambot can't deal with the graphic. I hope that it's done that way for the new forum software.

Looking into setting that up on auto.

zzman, it won't work. Every time I've tried to send a reply full of f words back to those guys the mail gets returned saying their mailbox is full. Probably with letters similar to mine.
