Hi, a friend of mine just bought an old 95 with a 160HP engine and 5 speed. The engine was replaced at some point. Anyway, he wants to get as much out of it as possible without changing the pump out. It has a #0 plate and 370's. What next? DVs, GSK, bigger injectors, afc kit? Or all of the above?

I do diesel performance, wheels/tires, custom interiors, custom paint, car audio/video, suspension. my main occupation is painting in our bodyshop and has been for the last 13 years. Our body shop has been in business for 37 years now. I just started messing with diesels about 5 years ago and have never got a chance to do much on the 12 valves besides the normal plate, 370's, turbo, etc. As far as 24 valves and 3rd gens, well I have no problem making them run. But I don't know near as much about the P7100 as I wish I did. I have a very good relationship with most of the top diesel shops in the country. So really I don't need to post on here for info, I just like to see what different opinions are and what different combos have been used. But I think this will be my last. Because I have a shop and I don't know everything, people tend to be a**holes about stuff. I'm not a cocky guy that thinks I know all. If I don't know, I ask. Thanks anyway, but I'll just pick up the phone and call somebody that really knows whats going on.

I was going to make note that if its a 5 spd. then its should be 175 HP pump , 160 is for an auto trans , but it sounds like your down here ??

The engine was pulled at some point and replaced with a 160hp engine. I am trying to talk him into swapping the pump out for a 215 pump.

Not sure who post #6 was directed at. . but wow... . #@$%!

Anyways, Id say your on the right track. Ive never had any dyno time with a 160 pump, but Ive done quite a few plates, gov springs, etc on them. those small pumps like injectors, and NEED gov springs. They really wake the pump up. I did a set of 3Ks in a 160 truck recently, and Id say go with 4's depending on the plate you use.

Im not a big fan of the AFC spring kits. The smaller spring has a hard time controlling the fuel with large injectors and laggy turbos. I run the stock 215 spring in mine, and it is more driveable, less smoky, better mileage, and doesnt put the fire out, per se, and makes good numbers on the dyno. I use the spring and foot in conjunction with the 0 plate to control fueling.

Any injectors bigger than 370's are good. I love my EDM 370's. They actually smoke less than even the stock 215's did, at the same power level of course. And they spool the turbo nicely. Only thing is, your afc tuning has to be good or the injectors will dump tons of fuel and loose power.

I second the fact for a good afc setup. I had my spring setup loose and afc forward and when I would romp on it, the truck would "fall on its face" way too much fuel. Tightened up the spring and moved afc back and way better bottom end without smoke!!!!

GSK was best thing I did to my small pump... even better than the #10 plate.

I'm sure that injectors would make a huge difference... I can't comment b/c I have always had 215's in there.

just my 2 cents

I like my setup and I do have a 160 pump (originally was an auto).

The delivery valves are really necessary and the DDP3s I have run good and my EGT's are reasonable. I've been able to keep my 160 pump and I run an HX35 and it's a nice daily driven setup that I really don't have that much invested in (bought the sticks used).

We're doing a 3000 GSK, Taper cut DV's from Mark at Piers Diesel, and I went ahead and ordered the afc kit. Guess we'll try the afc both ways. We gotta do the head in the near future, then we're gonna try DDP 4's and set of twins. How much timing should we run with this setup? Also, what plate profile best suits the160 pump?

Turbo upgrade?

Could you guys give me some advice on turbo upgrade?. Got a '95 12V w/ 3K gsk and #6 plate, (badley need a better air intake), but I'm ordering a ATS exhaust manifold shortly and now would be a good time for turbo change. I'm thinking an HX35 for mild upgrade?. . and I also have a BD exhaust brake installed. . Is there any problems connecting it up to a new HX35. . ?. .

any suggestions would be welcome... (and anyone with a slightly used HX35 for sale?). . Thanks. . John G

I had a #10 plate in mine. It did well, but that was with Bosch 300 stix. Timing was 18* running that way. If the shop you're friends with has access to a pump stand, you can get that 160 pump cranked way up. Not really necessary to replace with a 215

I have a 94 as u can see in my sig. And it has a 175hp pump. I bought the truck with a 3k gsk 15* timing and fuel plate slid full back. The stock 175 came with 131 DV's. I Installed the 370's, ground my fuel plate, slid it full forward, installed 191's, and the result was 318 rwhp and 704 rwtq. I wouldn't recommend this setup for towing with the stock turbo. I have the stock 273,000 mile hx-35w and let me tell you the egt's get up there.

That sounds about right. I had the exact same setup but with 215 sticks and 17* timing. Made 298 with egt's off the scale too. Can't imagine what they were like with 370's!

In touch with Piers?

Just go with a funny pump, upgrade to twins, 5" exhaust, and wait for the parts to fly. Then go back in it o-ring everything, cam, and same set up. If money is no object, there is no limit... ;)

My egt's can go as high as 1200 after the turbo (don't have pre charger, thermocouple) not too too bad, i guess... ...

You already have an HX35 on that truck, with a 12cm housing. Thats whats stock...

You could upgrade the 35 to the bigger wheel and exhaust housing, thats the next step without getting a whole turbo.
