I was sent an e-mail that allows us to identify products made in China!!!

They (Chinese) are becoming slicker & slicker at hiding their Made in China stamp. They know we do not like their products (well at least I don't) and have taken great efforts to hide it.

I feel it is important to know where our products are made.

Please copy and carry with you to screen inferior products. Support American made products when possible.

You usally get what you pay for.

This may be useful to know when grocery shopping.....

If it's a concern to you.

The whole world is afraid of China-made "black hearted goods".

Can you differentiate which one is made in Taiwan or China ?

If the first 3 digits of the barcode are 690, 691 or 692, the product is MADE IN CHINA.

471 is Made in Taiwan .

This is our right to know, but the government and related departments never educate the public, therefore we have to RESCUE ourselves.

Nowadays, Chinese businessmen know that consumers do not prefer products "MADE IN CHINA ", so they don't show from which country it is made.

However, you may now refer to the barcode, remember if the first 3 digits are:

690-692 … then it is MADE IN CHINA .

00 - 09 … USA & CANADA

30 - 37 … FRANCE

40 - 44 … GERMANY

47 ... Taiwan

49 … JAPAN

50 … UK

BUY USA by watching for "0" at the beginning of the number. We need every boost we can get!

Dude, once again your belief system doesnt align with facts. Go read snopes. This has been out since 2008 and is a post verbatim on snopes. Also, sub components put together in another country loose their barcode identity, so saying it "made in America" may be accurate but all the stuff in it was made somewhere else. The only true way to figure out where products are made in the global economy is to know the products and companies youre dealing with. Read the investment data on the companies, read their SEC fillings and read their quarterly reports. You'll find that some of your favorite American companies have production abroad.

Take this for what its worth

I deal with barcodes a lot at where I work and have never found a correlation between number and country of manufacture. In fact I am looking at a number this moment that starts 735854 and it states on the packaging that it is made in China (so much for 690,691,692 only for China).

UPC's are 12 digits long and some are 13 or 14 The first 6 digits(sometimes more) represent a specific manufacturer the next 5 digits(or less if the manufacturer number is longer than 6) represent that particular product of the manufacturer and the last digit is a check digit for error checking during the scanning process.

Some specific first digits- 2 for example is for random weight items, 4 is for in store use so that you can create your own and it not interfere with anyone elses -for example I make a lasagna in our store, it is sold nowhere else except in our stores the first digit would be a 4 (so much for taiwan)(this allows one to scan their own products without having to get a upc code from the UCC). 5 is the designated 1st number for coupons.

The list in the original post is right off wikipedia's website as I have seen it before. I wont bother with my opinion of wikipedia since it is editable by anyone. It would be nice if this were true and you could determine manufacturer origin from a upc but it isnt, at least in this way.

In addition to the above if 690,1,or 2 represent a true chinese manufacturer and seller(as opposed to an American or other country company having products made in China) that would only leave 3 digits to seperate them all from each other (999), plus the 0, 1 or 2 for a total of 2997 possible manufacturers in China seems a bit low. There are certainly more than 2997 individual manufacturing/selling companies in all of China, though maybe not if they are just making stuff for others to sell.

Hopefully some one here works for the UCC (the place that gives out the upc's) and chime in and set the record staright whatever it might be.

What's American made any more? Even our beloved Dodge trucks are made in Mexico with parts from all over the world.

I stand corrected on the barcode. Also what is snopes?

I realize that Made in America products have foreign components in them and I/we have no control over that, however I can chose items that state Made in America due to the percentage of US verses foreign components or country of assembly or origin.

Some New Balance shoes for example may be declared Made in USA because 70% of the components are of US origin.

I also realize that more and more products will be sourced from foreign countries that attempt to fill the gap left from our countries financial crisis which has caused many suppliers in the auto industry to go bankrupt.

God help the USA.

Snopes is an Internet rumour busting site. They debunk or verify all sorts of stuff. A great resource to check stories or spend the afternoon at work.

Snopes has been known to spin a good yarn; I no longer trust them.

Google 'myth busters', 'urban legends', and even 'false chain mail'. There are other sites out there that are more reliable; I just can't bring them to mind right now--CRS Syndrome, you know.

BTW, this thread really belongs in Other. Or Politics if the moderator has a burr up his britches.

1st, I don't think most Taiwanese people would like the fact that you classify them with the Chinese.

2nd, we now live in a global economy. I too am a supporter of buying American, however I understand that buying American is not always possible and that buying American does not guarantee top quality. Unfortunately China has given themselves a bad rap lately. One of the downfalls of transitioning from a Socialistic economy to a Capitalistic economy is greed, although China does have a rather unique way of addressing the problem (see Zheng Xiaoyu).

My suggestion is to always try and do your homework and make an educated (not emotional) purchase. That's my opinion, I could be wrong. :)

Taiwan is the largest island of the Republic of China, not to be confused with the People's Republic of China. They're Chinese but want nothing to do with the Communist government running mainland China.
