I read frequently that one should lock up the torque converter as quickly as possible when towing, etc. to prevent slippage, etc. that builds up heat, etc. How do you know when the t/c is locked up or unlocked and how can you lock it up quicker? Dan

First of all, let us know what year truck you've got. Fillin' out your sig isn't just to brag, it helps everyone know what your workin with when ya ask a question. ;)

Case in point: transmission programming is different in respect to the button on the end of your gear shifter for 03-04. 5 vs 05 vs 06.

03-04. 5 locks out overdrive only and is called an "od-off" button.

05 changes lockup points but allows use of OD. Called a "tow/haul" button.

06 tap it once its like the 05, tap it twice it'll also lock out OD.

Somebody make sure I've got that right in respect to the years.

If you tow alot and this is a concern for you, you may want to get a transmission temp guage. I've been surprised in the time I've had mine how hot it can get even empty over some long steep hills, ie switchbacks ect.

In answer to how to lock it up quicker, buy a controller. The stock PCM program protects the trans by unlocking the TC at the slightest hint of power application and won't lock again until your out of the throttle. The torque management in the new 48RE's basically does the same thing with some changes.

You should see about a 300 rpm drop when the TC locks under normal conditions. Under hard throttle it may be more.
