I have this posted in the 'General Diesel Tpoics' forum, but I'd like maximum exposure to hopefully get as many ideas as possible.

Just thought I'd throw this question out to the membership and see if one of you can come up with a suggestion.

I hopefully plan to purchase my truch within the next couple of years. If I could come up with an idea to put her to use in some kind of small business, the possibility of finally owning my dream truck would be assured, and, the order date could possibily be sooner.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

A lot of people haul OTR but they usually don't run with insurance b/c they say it is too expensive. That's too much of a risk for me, but some people are comfortable with it.

Youre in New York? You could haul boats. Put a cap on, and do small package delivery. A friend of mine used to go to NY state and bring back bails of hay. Lots of horse farms and race tracks around here.

Insurance is something to think about.

Lots of money in NY to be made during the never ending snow season,,Good Hinnaker poly plow and a set of tow straps,,Plow for parking lots and the straps for pulling the Brand-x boys out of snow banks cause they think their trucks are invincable... ...

Towing Phords to the Shop is one way to keep your truck busy. Cackle, chuckle, pinholes in the cylinder walls, dead glow plug relays...

Years ago A friend of mine plowed for Islip town. I think he just registered with the town and plowed the streets when it got too much for the town to handle. I think they pay by the weight of the truck. I know there is a inspection of some kind involved.

You could do just about anything you want in a business and write the truck off on your taxes. With your DODGE diesel, costing about $40,000. 00 per se, and you would be able to depreciate 20% off every year you use your vehicle, plus you can deduct your mileage for company use. Say you drove 10,000 miles per year at $0. 32 per mile, you would have a deduction of $3200. 00. Add that to the $8,000 depreciation per year, that comes to $11,300. So lets say you are in the 40% tax bracket, the government would give you a tax savings of $4500. 00. Would that make most of the payments on your truck?? That would give you a monthly savings of $377. 00. So what are you waiting for. Generate a great part time company that would allow you to use the truck and have fun at the same time driving your new rig. The government is great to small business's. I have been self employed for 13 years. Sure there are ups and downs, but I work when I want to or when my customers want me to.

Good luck,;)

One thing to think about is commercial inscurance is more money, and to register a commercial vehicle (at least here in MI) is more money also. I'm not saying it's $4500 more, but that is something to factor into the equation.

Around here guys (owner/operators) get ~$55/hour if they have a front and a rear blade. (You can get ~$15/hour to run their truck, so your truck is only renting out at $40/hour) IMO, for that much money plowing snow commercially with my own truck is just not worth it.

I'm sure it's different in other regions.

Buy a new truck,BOMB the snot out of it and tape a $100. 00 bill to the dashboard. Invite people for a ride and tell em if they can grab it when you nail it they get to keep it. If not they have to match it. Most of them will jump at it and that new truck will be payed off in no time.
