Ok, just found out that I need to get tested this month. If I undo the boost signal, will it show better or worse at the test? I'm thinking that it won't allow it to fuel as much. Any other ideas would be helpful. I just hope they don't crawl under the truck!
You do 3 snap idle tests. They tell you to push it to the floor and let of, real fast, 3 times. Since this would peg redline in a heart beat, what I did was press the throttle down about 1/3 throttle till I saw it hit 3000 rpms and let off real fast. Limit was 40 and I got 16.
They are only checking how dense the smoke is. Like Slybones said they want you to mash the throttle until the engine hits the governor and back off. He only gave 1/3 throttle, under no load it will it 3000 pretty quick, and no one is wiser. You can also put a stop on the throttle so it will only open 1/3 or so.
if u are heavily fueled then u need to back the star wheel off toward the firewall and put avallet switch in, which cuts boost going to the afc. It will run clean as can be
Sly, is the kitty still around your truck? This is my first test so I don't know what to expect. Which test station did you use? They all seem to be a little different around here!
I went to test with the wife and the dogs in the truck. They didn't want to get in the truck. The dogs are a beagle and black lab. Not even the ferocious variety.
IMHO, you stand a better chance of passing the opacity test without the annoying cat. The cat is there to clean up other emissions.
I used to regularily clean the cat turds on some of the better hills around Renton/Kent/Auburn.
Use Slybone's method. Luckily it is a no load & low boost test or they would be wondering what the woof woof sound is from under the hood... ... .
Man, it can be nice here in Cali with no emissions testing for diesels, but who knows, that damn Cali air resources board is probably going to crack down on them here sometime soon. Good thing I still got my stock fuel plate and cat. I heard if they do crack down out here they are going to require a cat on the exhaust, just a rumor though. Glad I didn't trash the cat when I went to the 4" straight pipe.
Check your states web site DB. I checked Nevadas and we don't have the snap idle test. We only have the opacity. The use a dyno & measure opacity @ a steady RPM. Yes, the Valet switch will be off. Oo.
as stated-- back of the AFC cover and the Star wheel and limit the fuel coming in. when I done mine last year, the PYRO was as high as I wanted to see it,( they don't watch anything except the computer screen) was about to tell him to let off and, and just then he let off. He made a comment, that it held really good and that it must have some power in it.
Hate it when it comes time to do this. I don't abuse my truck like this.
Here in Texas we don't have the test... ... ... . YET. A buddy with twins uses the valet switch to limit fueling via the AFC housing (I think) to keep smoke down. Also when his wife drives the truck, it keeps things in check. Why wouldn't one of these work? I don't think it limits RPM, they just don't come up as fast. It works great and there is NO smoke at low speed.
I may be completely off base on this, but just offering up another idea for you guys.
Jim
Added in edit: Reb. B and Sled Puller said it before me . The valet seems the way to go on heavy fueled or twin trucks.
