95 Dodge 3500 with 12v engine. Needs fuel injection pump removed to access tappet cover. I'm having a disagreement over how to reinstall. I know the most proper way is with the Miller special tool. I'm not trying to start any flame wars....
Can I just pin time the pump and engine? If I do that will the static timing be zero?
This is just a basic high mile stock work truck. No performance mods.

*edit* After further searching, it appears that for stock timing I can pin the engine and pin the pump then put it together. I'm just looking for a little more explanation and some confirmation...

Hey B, you got the meat and potatoes of the install. Unless you want the timing advanced past whatever the tag on the side of your timing cover says then you can pin both and tighten the bolts.

Here’s a excellent explanation:

Thanks. I suppose I'm not 100% clear on where the timing adjustment takes place, but for the purposes of just taking the pump off for access to the tappet cover and then putting it back on, I'm perfectly satisfied with just pinning pump and engine, then putting them back together. This particular truck made it nearly 400k miles before the tappet cover started pouring. I put a head and head gasket on it close to three years ago due to oil leaking out from under the head. Someone else did the front cover about 5 years ago.
