Any good directions on the how to and any specific things to look out for on replacing the VE pump? I've got the OEM manual and dug out the article Joe Donnelly wrote in Issue 76. Talking with the rebuild shop seems like I shouldn't have to time it since it's keyed (already have the timing stuff for the P-7100, but not for the VE.

I did a quick search and didn't see anything in the FAQs or such and didn't find anything in the forums that specifically dealt with this (then again my wife has accused me of being blind).

Thanks for all your help!

Dan

Its not hard to do just make sure the engine is at TDC for the number one clinder, then there is a plastic plug on the back side of the timeing cover under the pump, if the engine is at the right spot it should push into its hole and into the cam gear, then there is a small (10mm) bolt I think on the bottom side of the pump. you run it out a little remove the small metal plate behind it then run it back in to lock the pump. Then you can remove the pump.

You will need a gear puller to get the drive gear off the end of the pump shaft as well, this can be done by removeing the oil fill tube and putting the puller in through the hole in the timeing cover, after the pump is remove the gear will stay in place by itself.

Hmmm, I thought maybe someone would have a cheat sheet, besides the OEM manual on the how to and gotcha stuff. I've take the pump off for the rebuild. I will post later what I found, where I found it and any other info that might help people when they need to do this.

Guidelines on how to replace the VE pump

Here is what I did and found for instructions on doing this:

- OEM manual - very good!

- Issue 76 pages 88-92 - Joe Donnelly's article "Have Ram, Will Travel".

- Recall Notification #605: http://dodgeram.info/tsb/recalls/605.htm

Part numbers for gaskets/etc

MOPAR = CUMMINS

05016555AB = 3963983 larger Banjo bolt washer

04728041 = 3918188 - small Banjo bolt washer (air pressure line)

05011956AB = 4089077 - rod and ball linkage

04425053 = 3914353 - bushing for throttle linkage pivot

Anything to be aware of:

- Take pics of linkage before you remove anything.

- use caps to keep everything clean!

- Make sure you place the fuel supply line on as you are placing the pump in - it will not fit after the pump is mounted.

- Do NOT tighten the pump mounting nuts until you tighten the gear nut to 18 ft lb (to save your new pump).

- Put the injection pump rear bracket back on AFTER the fuel lines (the OEM manual says to do this the other way around).

I also modified the oil pressure socket to get onto the sending unit. I didn't have problems on the 96, but on the 92 I couldn't get the socket on - so this made it possible. See pics.

Hope this helps someone in the future!

Dan
