How to stop loud screech at shutdown

Thanks, TDR Staff

Has anyone used both auxillary oil ports?

I know it's normal for the engine to make the screeching sound when you turn the motor off (according to the posts I've read here), but does anyone know how to eliminate the noise, or at least quiet it down a little. Mine does it every time, and my passengers always want to know what's wrong with my new truck. From what I've read it's just the engine stopping faster than the belts, so is there anything that could be sprayed on the belts? Thanks for any suggestions.

I've had 4 Dodge/Cummins trucks and none had the chirp. My dad has had 2 and both of his had it. Can't figure out why some do and others don't. Personally, I'm glad mine doesn't do it.

Pass out earplugs or turn up the music before shutting down ;)

If your passengers believe it has to do with faulty operation, brag to them about it being because these engines have more mass and torque than most passenger vehicles and that when the CTD wants to stop, it stops; regardless of whatever else is hangin' on. That little chirp is just an auditory reminder that the serpentine belt is at it's correct tension... :D

I've been telling people the semi's make that sound too when they shut down, but I have to admit I'm not sure if that's true. Does anyone know if semi's with Cummins also make that sound?

I believe it's mostly trucks with an automatic transmission that make the belt squeek. Mine is a 6-speed and has never squeeked the belt. Must have to do with the mass difference between the clutch assembly and a torque convertor/flexplate.

Try a little belt dressing on it. That may stop it. I'd do that before buying a Gatorback. :)

I've been told that belt dressing is bad.

On the other hand having a spare belt is very good! Get the Gatorback and put your stock belt in your toolbox.

You won't be sorry.

rbattelle I'm not flaming you by the way.

That's a very valid point. All my trucks were manuals and didn't do it. Both of my dad's were autos and did it.

My first two CTD's (98. 5 (auto) and "02 (6 speed)) chirped loudly when I shut 'em off. My new 04. 5 doesn't chirp when I shut 'er down.

I've always interpreted the screech as meaning my engine has plenty of compression. I hope it screeches for the next 300,000 miles. If it were me, and the passengers were commenting on it I'd just say that one of the kittens must have fallen off the air intake housing.
