I would like to take off the the fuel heater screan and clean it. Just wondering how to do this? Will I need any new seals for also?
Where is the overflow valve? Sounds like that is something I could check and inspect also?

I have had multiple posts about this overflow valve, do a search with my username, and you should find useful info.

Jeff,
Pre filter is easy deal. Just make sure your not directly under neath when the diesel starts to come out. (Bring a Pail with you. )
As I recall 10mm socket/extension/rachett will fit bolt on bottom. Inside screen will have nut holding it on. I had no problem with the gasket.

With the overflow valve, one it is located on front/back/top of injector pump with banjo screw with fuel line(metal tubing) coming out of it and running behind injector pump.
To do preliminary just reasch down or use stick(broom,mop,rake... ) and push in/out on your primer button. When enough pressure builds up you should be able to hear the fuel going thru it. If you hear it it's working if not?.
An exact test would be to do a fuel pressure test. With engine ruuning and test guage on, stick you hand(you mite want pliers or vice grip)down under by injector pump and grab rubber hose and squeeze if pressure comes up you have a bad valve, if it stays down bad lift pump.
If your getting over 20 psi on outlet(supply line for injector pump) line of fuel filter everything(valve and filter) should be working OK. You will aLso need to rev engine to around 2000 rpm and check pressure.
The return fuel valve releases fuel out of injector pump at around 22 psi.
Go a head and check archives and recent post for acceptable pressure for different rpms.

Someone here posted the excellent idea to place a plastic bag over the heater after breaking the nut but before removing the bowl. Diesel in the armpit isn't my idea of fun.

The Pre-filter job can be done from the top very easily.

Don't forget that there is a $0. 66 quad o-ring on TOP of the fuel heater also that is worth looking at while your taking this apart. Fritz noted the PN above.
After the pre-screen bowl comes off, you'll have access to the allen bolt that holds the heater on. This bolt goes right thru its center.

My overflow valve went bad on me and the symptom was power loss at freeway speed especially towing. I removed the spring in it and stretched it to . 550 and its working great.
