Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) how to tell which rear end ratio?

Can I tell from a vin number if it has 3. 55 of 4. 1 gears? I am looking at buying a new truck on ebay. Seller "cant find" the sticker on the underside of hood. Says it does not "feel like" 4. 10 gears. Is there any other way to tell? I asked him to drive it and look at the rpms at 55 mph, but..... Auction over at 8:00 sunday night.

Tell him it is either under the hood near the grille, or ion the inside of the glove box door. Also there are black painted aluminum tags under a bolt on each diff cover giving the bill of materials number and th ratio.
