How/Why does inj. pump fail?

Hi all
This is my first post here in 3rd gen 5. 9s but I am an advid reader. My stock 05 with only 19,000 miles quit running with no notice, got it hauled into the dealer and they said the inj. pump had failed, the tech said he could get -0- fuel out of it and put a new one on under war. for $3,800. 00 + $300. 00 labor for a total price of $4,100. 00 (plus towing, also covered)My cost $0. My question is what would make a gear driven pump completly fail at a snap of your fingers. I am guessing my pump will get remaned and go back into the system and the $3,800 is a B. S. # as it must have a $2,000. 00 core value. I wanted to tear it apart and see what really failed but that was not allowed. Any thoughts about all this would be welcome.

Not sure BUT a friend lost his pump (05) and was told that the his lift pump had failed sometime earlier. Without the lift pump the truck still ran but the fuel flow wasn't enough to cool the injector pump... Result - rebuilt pump. He is going to install a pressure gauge on the lift line to monitor it from now on. .

This is the kind of thing I was wondering about, if it fails again I don't want a finger pointed at me as if I did something wrong. I did run a couple of tanks of B20 this summer and then changed the fuel filter, other than that this truck gets babied but i do have a snow plow on her. I never plowed snow with a diesel before, if you get the turbo spinning by the end of your run she just keeps going, I climed up on a couple piles of snow this winter with both feet on the brake.

HWebster is correct. Your injector pump is lubricated by the very substance it pumps (diesel fuel). So when your lift pump fails, it does not provide enough diesel fuel to the injector pump (no lubrication) which in turn causes the injector pump to crap out. I'm not sure if B20 has the lubricity of #2 diesel. That may or may not be the cause. I can't say for sure. A fuel pressure gauge will help monitor the lift pump. They're very easy to install but a little costly.

I have lost 3 lift pumps on my 04 dodge.

the fuel lubes the pump my ip is running fine the reason it has not failed its the fuel I burn.

not here to brag about the fuel I want to tell you something about the fuel tank sender fitting on all these trucks.



Please. when you change the in tank fuel pump to an fuel pump thats will work change the dip tube on the sender the fitting for the main fuel hose is 1/4 inch not 1/4 pipe but 1/4 inch ID.



The pumps you put on will have 3/8 or 1/2 inch pipe fittings on them if you hook them to a 1/4 id hose that pump will not last long then there goes another ip. how do I know this will that's pump number three.



We changed to an 1/2 SS tube with . 035 wall dip tube on my tank no problems with fuel pumps after this.

Thanks, good info. I did not (yet) need the lift pump, just the IP. Question, The tech said he got NO fuel at the IP, will the lift pump push fuel thru the IP? I am guessing he checked pre injector. Question 2 What would stop the flow of fuel inside the IP?
