Hey guys, I was just curious as to how ya'll turned down the idle adjustment on your trucks. I kave used a screwdriver and a hammer to break mine loose, but I'm almost sure there is a secret to get the nut loose. This might be a good chance to get some tips for some people who haven't made the adjustment yet.

The idle adjustment is just plain hard. Even with the special wrench to loosen the lock nut it is still a pain. My idle screw will back off by itself during idle with the locknut loose! If I want to increase the speed I use a jewler's screw driver.

I searched thru my tools to find the right one for the job. The tool i ended up using was in a box of old cheap tools that I normally consider junk. The tool is a little nut driver kind of tool. It came with a cheap set of 1/4" drive sockets and a rachet, dad must've bought them 30 years ago. Any way the nut driver has a square end to put sockets on it like a rachet. The shaft is flexible, this lets me put the socket on the nut and bend the shaft to get out to where I can turn it. Then to actually adjust the idle I use a right angle screw driver that rachets. It is a craftsman item, about 3 1/2 inches long with a screw driver blade sticking out both ends.

What I ended up doing is using a 10mm deep socket (1/4" drive)and the little extension used to attach it to a screwdriver or ratchet. This extension is about 1 1/4" long and fits into a 1/4" socket on a ratchet. Leave off the ratchet and use a 1/4" combo wrench to slide over the extension. This is just long enough to clear everything but not so long that you can't get a grip on the little bugger. You may find that when you've done the adjustment and go to tighten up the nut again it will drag you adjustment up a bit so watch that and don't make the final 'tighten up' till you've double checked the idle.
It worked for me. Still, its a pain in posterior quarter panel.
