hey gang.

my name's Forrest Nearing (pretty original handle, no?) anyhow, I've been a LONG time lurker here, but realisticly couldn't see myself affording a Cummins Dodge for at least a few more years, but I came across a good deal on a 91. 5 from a buddy. he got it at 100k and hauled furniture back and forth from California (I'm in Dallas and I too am back and forth between the bay area/silicon valley and here)

it's a single cab long bed. 2wd/auto. it's got a 5th wheel plate, a trailer brake controller, a leer camper shell, and a 110gal auxiliary tank. it's got just shy of 200k miles on it and still kickin' (sure hope it holds up!)

the truck had a K&N and a turbo shop muffler on it when I got it... I cleaned the K&N and swiss cheesed the air box and promptly welded in a straight pipe instead of the muffler! :D

a local buddy who messes with turbo gas hot rods with me also has a 1st gen and he's gonna help me tweak the pump a little this week. :)

the only maintenence I've had to do thus far were the back brakes... the dadgum passenger side ebrake cable seized up on me, so I replaced that and hung some new shoes out back (first experience with floating axles!)

I've put 800 miles on her in the last 5 days and I haven't gone outside of a 1hr radius!!! LOL!

anyhow, just introducing myself!

thanks guys,

Forrest

Welcome aboard!!!

Good to have another 1st genner... As you may or may not know this forum has info-a-plenty on selecting injectors, turbine housings and of course, adjusting that pump for some smokin power. Good luck and don't be shy about the questions, everyone here is ready and willing to help out...

BTW, 200K miles is just broke in!!!!LOL;)

J-eh

thanks!

oh yeah, I've got a buddy who works at a turbo shop that does a lot of diesel stuff, and he's trading me a 12cm gated housing for a pair of old mustang headers I had laying around...

planning on the 12cm housing and maybe a 4" exhaust and the pump tweaks...

eventually I'd like to get some Lucas marine injectors, but I'm on a tight budget, so mods will have to be of the free variety for now.

take care,

Forrest

Hey Forrest welcome

Could you ask your buddy how to get the hot side of a turbo loose, I have a no cost 18 cm that I want to swap for the 21 that is on my truck. I would swap the whole thing but the 18 is blowing oil on the pressure side. All the bolts are out and it has been soaking in PB Blaster for a week at least, would he have any suggestions?

Again welcome to the gang!

Alan

getting the turbine housing off is always a LOT of fun... the older it is and the more humid your climate, the "funner"! ;)

the "easiest" way we've found is to have someone hold the cold side of the turbo in both hands wit the turbine housing facing down and take a 1" brass drift and a BFH (3lb?) and hammer away! if you don't have a brass drift, you can just hit the housing with a hammer (especially if you don't plan on keeping it), but you should be careful because it COULD dent or crack...

note: I've tagged various turbine housings pretty damn hard with a 2lb hammer getting them off (no brass punch) and never damaged one...

shouldn't need heat... re-assemble everything with nickel based anti-seize so it'll come apart next time.

take care,

Forrest

also, I wouldn't even go through the trouble to swap in an 18...

sure, there'll be a difference, but I'd want to jump to a 16 at LEAST, but I'd be looking for a 12 or 14... some of the later trucks run a 9cm housing, and a lot of the big dogs are making some pretty serious power through a 12cm housing, so with a gate, you're probably not going to max out the 12, and it's gonna give more oomph down low... our engines aren't winders like some of the later engines...

if it's free and you just gotta get out there and tweak your rig, by all means go for it, but I'd want to get a tighter one on there myself...

and yes, I realize I'm gonna have to tweak the downpipe to use the later turbine housing/WG assembly... at this point in my budget, I'm probably just gonna keep the 3" pipe... :(

take care,

Forrest

Well FWIW here's how I did it. I sprayed the bolts/joint with liquid wrench once a day (when cool) for about a week. Then on the weekend I hit 'er again good, let it sit for about 20 minutes and pulled the turbo right off the exhaust manifold.

Then I place a "spacer" between the 4 bolt head(s) and the compressor end, and turned the bolts out slowly.

-Alternating in an X pattern. In effect I used the bolts 'torque' to push the hot end of the housing away from its mating surface. No hammering, no missed 'shots' with a BFH ;). it popped out like an old tooth. :p :p

-The only thing you need to watch is that when it finally lets go, you do not let the hot end hit the pinwheel. If you bend it your hooped. :(

To be honest I read the BFH idea from several people here and while sitting on the ground looking at, came up with the idea I used. Worked for me. :)

- Ps: use some anit-seize compound on the bolts when you re-assemble. Also the studs/nuts on the exhaust manifold are "special" and pricey. Apparently they won't loosen off due to heating an cooling like regular off the shelf one's can sometimes do so, use lots of liquid wrench and try not to hurt em. Two of my manifold studs came out and two others stayed in.

Make sure your oil return line on the bottom is pointing straight down when you put the turbo back on too.

If it don't work you can always beat on it.

uh oh, we've got a thinker on our hands here!!!! ;)

dude, that is a SWEET method!!!

and here I am utilizing and suggesting brute force...

this next time around I'm using your method!!! LOL!

seriously, that's a sweet idea... I can't believe that's never dawned on me... I like to think I'm SOMEWHAT intelligent and I'm sitting here slapping my forhead for never even thinking about that...

THANKS!!!!

Forrest

Day Late...

Hey Forrest!

A bit late with my Welcome... But, Great to have you "Aboard"! I like your style and good natured approach... :p

These guys are great & 'mucho' fun... Informative also!

KEENO:D

Probably doesn't need to be mentioned but NEVER hit the die cast aluminum Compressor side w/ a BFH! Common sense I know... But I don't always think clearly when frustrated!:)

thanks! I've seen your posts all over the place during my lurking.

yeah, in this life, I'm just out to have some fun, try to make a little money (I mean "little" :( ), and build a couple hot rods...

I was into mustangs a LONG time ago, but I got bored with driving/building belly buttons, so I started tinkering with fairmonts... my 81 Fairmont wagon ran 12. 30's NA with a total investment of under $4k in the car...

I'm currently building a turbo 4cyl 86 mustang coupe (I know, I know... it's a mustang, but it's nice and ugly at least!) that SHOULD be able to crack 11. 99 with a total investment of under $2k including the car!

that's what I'm all about... going fast for cheap... crushing overinflated egos that were purchased on credit if ya know what I mean!!!

AND I've had a lust to own a Cummins for a few years now... I'm a po' boy, and never thought I'd own one... not for a good 3-4 years from now, but I got a good deal on this truck.

ANYHOW, this is a really good group on here... it reminds me of the turboford.org board (dedicated to the Ford 2. 3l turbo engine). no flames, great comradery, etc. I'm VERY excited about the truck and about having a new forum to play on all day! :D

thanks to everyone for the warm welcome!

Forrest

Welcome

Good to have more first-genners!

Have you & your friend done those pump adjustments that you mentioned yet? If so, how do you like the results?

I have been a racer in the past too, now into Jeepin' and my Cummins. :D :D

Hey Forrest

Tried your method (BTW I was using the backed out bolts and no-go) and a combonation of the two resulted in the hot end un roosting it's self from the mid section. Also no damage to the turbine. I appreciate all the help!

Thanks
