It would be very interesting to know whats in each of the different fuel additives as the ones I have used do not list that on the labels, truth be known they're probable all pretty much the same. Does anyone know whats in these additives?
I've looked at the MSDS of many fuel additives, most are exactly the same just slightly different percentages of the same chemicals. The main ingredient in all is at least 55% kerosene. Check out the ingredients of 250,000 products here http://msds.pdc.cornell.edu/msdssrch.asp
If you can't find Howe's, look in Walmart for Power Service, it seems to work well, also Stanadyne makes excellent additives, it is usually sold at injection pump shops or you can order it from Diesel Injection Servicedieselpage.com
FWIW, I've used both Howes and Stanadyne. I get the Howes free, and I still prefer the Stanadyne PF. I find that it has improved my 'Bombing' smoke alot. I see atleast a 30-40% reduction in WOT smoke. Also improved (less) cold start smoke too. Lastly I see a slightly higher idle RPM (about 50-60 RPM) with the SPF. When I run out of SPF I put in the Howes till I can get more of the Stanadyne. I understand the Howes may have slightly better lubricity improvement than the SPF but I can't say imperically what if any that difference is. I pay around $11. 00 Canadian for a bottle. ( I think its a 10oz. bottle) Its cheaper by the case at around $9. 00 per.
What ratio are people using. The bottle says that one bottle treats 250 gallons of diesel fuel. One ounce for every 4 gallons of diesel fuel.
At the bottom of the directions it says that the ratio should be doubled for diesel pick-ups. Does this include the Cummins Ram? Aren't we in a class by ourselves? That may be a biased opinion!! Should I be using the 1 ounce to 4 gallons or the doubled 1 ounce to 2 gallons?
I also use 8oz per tank. I found mine at a truck repair place in town. Braatan Int. Dont know if I spelled it right but point being find a semi repair shop they will have it.
