On travel and need help! My truck just started howling today on my drive down to Austin. It would only do it when the truck speed was above 60mph. I could take it out of gear on the highway letting the engine fall to idle and the noise was still there, so it must be coming from the drivetrain and not the engine. I felt all wheel bearings and nothing was warm or hot. All the tires are relatively new <12k. Is this a symptom of the drive shaft carrier or u-joints going out? Will take any suggestions.

Same "HOWLING" problem

I had the same issue with my 2004. 5 truck at speeds between 60-70 mph. Took it in for service and set an appointment to have foam shot into the drive shaft. When I went to pick it up, they ended up replacing some gears in the rear end. No more noise, runs great and it was under warranty. I have about 27,000 miles on the truck.....

I checked everything under the truck until my Dad asked if I had recently done anything to the truck. I told him that I installed new CB whip last week but didn't remember hearing this "howling" sound till yesterday, so naturally I didn't think this was it.

Turns out, it WAS the CB antenna causing the howling noise and not the truck. Durring my drive down to Austin, we were facing a +25 mph head wind and this added to a 70 mph truck speed ='s lots of vibrations on this particular antenna.

A message for the young ones, listen to your elders. . or atleast the ones who have made the mistakes before you. They'll save you the headaches you can cause yourself!
