My Dad always used to say the same thing, so I looked it up (Google is a wonderful thing). I found this:

Fair to Middlin' came from the Cotton

Markets of years ago. Fair to Middlin' probably

came to this country from Scotland. When they

were Grading the cotton in the warehouses, the

"grader" would go down the rows, saying about

the bales, Fair, Good, Middle. . all grades of

cotton. Some fell in a wider category, so they

graded it Fair to Middle... "fair to middlin'

As with all things Internet, I cannot vouch for it's authenticity or accuracy...

I usually reply that it's the "Best day of my life". Usual response from the person asking is "Really"?

My next reply is one of the following.

"I lied"

or

"It's not much of a life, and this is as good as it gets"

Some laugh, other don't know what to think.

I always figured "fair to middlin" was self explanatroy- could be better, could be worse.

Depending on the situation and who is asking- "best damb day of my life; how bout you? (normally in a VERY sarcastic tone when all is not going so smoothly), to "alright, I guess; yourself?"

"could be better. " If I'm in this area, I dont add the could be worse- dont want to tempt fate and let her make it worse.

I either say "Hangin in there" or I'll go into one of those Richard Lewis routines where he whines and complaines about every thing and any thing. :D
