Had to replace my vp44 every thing i had saw on them was about 235 hp and 245 hp when i removed my pump and got checking my engine tag shows 215 hp what make the differents in the engines hp is it the pump , computer , internal parts or what?

It's difficult to provide helpful information without knowing the year of your truck. Why don't you fill in your signature?

I don't remember ever hearing or reading about a 24 valve engine using a VP-44 pump that was only rated at 215hp for use in a Dodge. I remember them being rated at 235hp in the SO version and 245hp in the HO.

The first HO engine was offered in '01 as the HO six speed. It was rated 245hp and 505 tq. The injection pump and computer are primarily used by Cummins to determine power output but the HO engines used pistons with oil cooling jets, slightly lower compression, and possibly other internal parts to make them reliable and durable under the higher power ratings.

It is my belief that all the cummins that we are using, including the 4BT all have the cooling jets.

Fox, thanks. I'm sure you are correct and my earlier post was incorrect. I received an e-mail from Bill Stockard a few minutes ago telling me the same thing. I was just getting ready to add his correction to make it right.

Maybe you or someone else with greater knowledge can straighten me out here. My feeble memory tells me that years ago when I read the engine description of the 24 valve HO (245hp version) of the 2001/2002 Cummins 5. 9 (like my old '01 HO/six speed) there was mention of an additional cooling feature included on the HO version that was not provided on the SO engine. Am I just confused?

The 24V auto up to 00' ? was rated at 215hp. It was my understanding that the motors were downrated for the auto trans. The manuals got the higher output. Early 01' and up got 235hp and 460tq for automatic transmission and the HO was,as previously stated,245 and 505.

Tag on the side of my timing cover reads H. P. 215 - but that was stock = no longer accurate after I did the DTT and dropped a few BOMBs:-lafOo.
