New at this Game(Threads?) . Anyway, presently own 2500HD 95' xcab,4x4 ,auto trans ,bone stock with 155k miles. Iam about ready to take the HP upgrade plung. I use this truck as a daily driver with half the time on the freeway and half city traffic . I also tow a 3500lb boat up and down the sierra mountains on the weekends. Great truck but can not take the lack of power. Below

is a list of the upgrades that Iam having a shop in Sac do in three

weeks.

The goal given to the shop was to attain 350HP at the wheels.

This is what we came up with between myself and the owner of

the shop.

Transmission new BD

Torque Converter BD

Injectors BD

Turbo back exhaust 4" In house

Trans Cooler BD

Horton Fan Kit

Twin Ram Intake Banks

Gov Spring Kit

Fuel Plate

60lb springs

Exhaust Brake BD

Torque Loc BD

Turbo quick BD or Banks

K & N filter

Gauges Ex Temp,Boost,Trans Temp

3 PC Pulse Exhaust manifold

Any first hand feedback on the choices?

I highly recommend that you get DTT stuff for your transmission instead of BD. Search these forums for a LOT of reasons why! In particular the Torque Lock is bad news. Call Bill K. at DTT. This is his URL:

http://www.dieseltrans.com/DTTech/index.sht

Bill's stuff is not a one size fits all. He wants to know what you are going to it for and recommends the best configuration for you. His customer service is the best on the planet.

Here we go again...

www.dieseltrans.com VS. www.bdpower.com vs I dont know his addy

Lets all be nice

PS Milled strators are cheap to purchase and you get what you pay for.

First, why 350hp? I've got 266. 9 and compared to stock, it's night and day. You should be aware that if you get up in that area, you will be in danger of breaking stuff. Just thought I'd give you fair warning. As for the mods... .

BD transmission and torque converter, you will probably hate the torque converter. You won't be able to push the truck over a curb from a stand still, even with the extra power. At least, this is what some members have reported.

Injectors:  Do you know what size of injectors? If the shop hasn't told you, ask and report here, the members will let you know if they will realisticly get you the boost you're looking for.

4" exhaust: This will help with EGT's, don't expect hp or mpg gains from this.

Trans cooler

Horton Fan: Ok, but you could really save your money and put that on later. It's a neat add on, but I don't hear of any overheating complaints from members without it.

Banks intake: Probably unecessary.

Gov. spring kit: Alot of people like this add on.

Fuel plate: Once again, like the injectors, which plate is it? Find out.

Exhaust brake: If you don't live in the mountains and tow alot, skip it. Brake pads are cheaper than transmission parts and I don't care what you put on there, the exhaust brake will lessen the life of your transmission.

Torque loc  Oh boy. This is one of Bill K. 's favorite devices :D (just kidding Bill). Pay VERY CLOSE ATTENTION. If they tell you the torque loc is to be used ONLY for the exhaust brake, fine. If (more than likely when) they tell you to use it to lock up the converter to improve acceleration, RUN! This device used for that purpose will grenade your transmission and you know what they will say when you take it back because it did? TOUGH!

K&N: Like the exhaust, you won't get more power or mpg but it's a personal preference thing.

Gauges are a must.

These are just my opinions and there are alot of guys on this board who know ALOT more than me but I don't think I'll get much disagreement from them on any of this. Keep us posted on how it goes.

Welcome to the TDR Website!

I agree with everything "danandme" told you. He is giving

you good advice. One important thing I did not see on your

list is GAUGES! To me that is THE MOST important thing as

you need to closely monitor what is going on in your engine,

especially if you are at 350 H. P. I would recommend AT LEAST

a pyrometer gauge and boost gauge. The pyrometer monitors

the EGT's (exhaust gas temps) of your engine and believe me

if you are at 350 H. P. your WILL get into the "danger zone. "

As a general rule, if the pyrometer probe is installed before

the turbo the "upper limit" should be 1300 degrees. AFTER

the turbo it is 1000 degrees.

I'm sure more members will respond. You can look at my

signature to see where I am at, modification wise. What

is there represents 381 H. P.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply's, appreciate the specifics, such as with the

BD converter I will not be able to go over a curb at a stand still.

So, what are the advantages of the DTT transmission/converter

combo, specifics please. Any direct issues with the BD transmission?

I will be using the truck for Up/Dwn hill towing that is why I opted

for the Exhaust break.

Not sure of the injector size, I just believe that they are from BD.

Would the Marine 370 be a good choice?

The Fuel plate? No idea, any suggesions.

My original idea was to replace the entire pump with a 400HP from

BD. The mechanic suggested that he could set my pump up for a

lot less money and the pump had only 155K on it

Gauges will be included in the HP upgrades

Maybe Iam going about this project in the wrong manner. I assumed that I was choosing reputable proven products. I wanted to do the upgrades all at once for Iam on vacation

for a few months and can afford to give-up the truck for the

upgrades as I use this as a daily driver to the Bay area.

It sounds like to me you have made good choices, the only thing you may need to add for the 350# is high flow delivery valves.

Also be sure you get the X stator not the R6 as far as tc's go I think you would be happy. I am.

I'm very pleased with the mods that I have. The plate is currently just off the stock position. We (Piers) had it further forward but I wasn't happy with having to constantly monitor the EGTs. In it's current "de-tuned" state, it has about 40 less HP but I can assure you that 340 RWHP is more (much more!) than enough for a small trailer in the mountains. I'm glad I have a 5 Sp because use my exhaust brake all the time. At 80K I'm still on the original pads.

Sleeper

one more thing

The DTT 91% or 93% Torque Convertor is proven and is also less expensive than the New BD X convertor.

I'll add my $. 02 here.

Definitely DTT transmission mods. I'll let Bill tell you himself as to why. Give him a call. And he will also tell you why NOT to force the TC to lock up (BD's Torque Lock). Bill will also tell you why not to get an exhaust brake, especially towing only 3500lbs. And if you don't get the exhaust brake you don't need the 60lb. valve springs.

IMO don't spend the $$$ on the Banks intake, it may be more for looks than performance.

The Horton is nice and is good for 20HP at higher RPM but you don't not need it to attain your goal of 350hp. FWIW I'd like a Horton too but at ~$700 I don't need one either.

16cm Turbo housing, fuel plate, 370 injectors, and delivery valves I think should get you where you want to be.

I suggest to read guys sigs and see where there at HP wise and ask questions from there.

-Ryan

IMO call Piers and if you are on vacation, drive up there have the transmission done at DTT and the engine mods done at PDR (Piers shop). Just a thought?
